I just don't know/get it. Smoke & plastic mirrors?

thanks :)

would like to try that for myself sometime ... tooooooooooo dear for a bit of plastic (id make a throwaway test out of plasterboard (drywall sheet) £6 and glue it together with decorators caulk £2 ) before even considering spending the price of a boutique pedal .. seems they matched the angle of the speaker, should take around 15 mins to make and a day or 2 to cure ...

edit:-

JDOD that's more modern sounding !

Liv-rog - bit back of the box,but the tones in there :)

edit,edit:-

saw a reeel nice "brand new" lol chibson 2? years ago in my local geetar shop,it was beautiful! i mean REALLY nice .. the glossy finish had depth, was shiny as hell (brought out the magpie in me!) gibbo or not it really did look the part .. sadly i didn't get the chance to play it cos it was sold (£520)

the tale i was told was gibbo now (then) have started having bits made over there,so when the guys shifts are over they knock these out .. supposed to be the same tools/jigs .. basicly a gibbo but made after hours ... meh! whatever the truth behind em they are nice :D

makes me wonder what monitors you're using .... on my 'puter speakers which usually translate decently, the entire mix is super dark and the kick is so overblown and woofy that it overdrives my speakers badly.

Tones are always influenced a lot by the monitoring so I'm wondering about your playback chain.

That's interesting. It sounds really good to me.

I'm monitoring using my headphones and then checking it through my stereo. I don't have a set of proper monitors.

Edit: I'm gonna download this mix to my iPad and listen to it in bed with some ear buds now and see if it sounds shit.

Edit 2: just listened to it using ear buds though my iPad. Sounds fine... Odd

sounds ok to me .. rooms a bit boxy,,these new cans im breaking in are a bit bass heavy, but your track doesn't sound over the top ...

I have a fake Gibson acoustic guitar. I bought it for 100 bucks at a pawn shop who knew it was fake. It has real Grover tuners so I figured I would take the chance. Turned out to be pretty OK. I left it at my mom's house but I'll post pics when I get back out there.

Greg, don't want to spam the Philthy Taylor thread - but what did you think of my tone on my cover of Road Crew? Still a bit dark? I did have distortion on the bass on that one mind.

I didn't see it. I'll double check.

It is a little dark. Not as dark as others you've posted. But if you're comparing it to the original, it's kind of similar. The original has a roomy thick tone but you can tell the clarity is in there. Yours has a lot of thickness in the lows and low mids whereas Eddie Clark's has more grunt in the midrange and highs.

But you did the drums all wrong! You need to double-time that shit. :D

Cheers, I suppose I wasn't going for an Eddie Clarke tone. I was just going for a good rock tone. I'll probably re-record a couple of my own tracks with that tone, possibly with a bit more mid/high added. To be honest, I don't know what the knobs are on. I got the amp out of the car last night and just set the master to 50% this morning and started playing. I'll probably post another version of this tone over the weekend when I've tweaked it a little more.

Yeah, I couldn't get the double time drums to sound right. If I was actually a drummer it would probably be easier - I'm such a shit drummer though I have to stick to things I can do where I'm 100% sure how many arms I'm using and where they're supposed to be going.

The EQ was roughly where left it after chatting to uncle bob about my previous tone last week. 20151113_172805.webp
You can see I've already got a fair bit of mid/high in there.

The "mid" on a guitar amp can be misleading. Lows and highs are pretty universal, but mids can be centered all over the map. If your mids are based on say 500hz, adding a bunch of it can make the low end thick since there's usually some overlap between frequency ranges. When you bring up those mids, you're also bringing in the upper end of the low control. That's a recipe for super thick low mids.

not only are they centered all over the map .... the 'width' of the mids affected can vary a lot ..... one of my amps the mid effects everything! :D
Turn it up and the highs AND lows go up!

The place the knob is pointed means nothing ..... use your ears.
I very frequently might have lows OR highs all the way up to get an amp to sound like I want it to.

It's also not that uncommon to have some tone control on zero.

Hey guys,
The walking dead checking in again here....I'm doing ok, things are just gonna be a lot different for me from now on, but, I'm alive over here.....

Good points on the mids on amps, every amp I've had in the past couple years, the mid knob did something a little different. On the DSL100H, the mid knob adds high-mids along with a little high end when I turn it way up. The 1w version was pretty similar. But on the Ceriatone, it did what I expected. The rest (Egnater, Blackstar, etc), also did pretty much what I expected, but they were all centered on a different frequency, but that also makes sense too, since they were very different amps...

I'll upload those ampsim tones I mentioned a few days ago in a little while, still trying to get settled in after all this shit has hit the fan, but again, I'm alive over here, & very, very grateful (and very, very lucky) to be here...

Exactly. 100% truth.

Like the Marshall Jubilee. That amp might as well only have a mid knob because it's sweep is so extreme and deep that it basically overrides everything.

Use your ears and nothing else matters.

Hey! Good to see you're still kicking. Me and Shan Peyton were getting worried.

Hey! Good to see you're still kicking. Me and Shan Peyton were getting worried.

Thanks for the concern man, honestly, it's been pretty fuckin' rough for me dude. I had the "big" heart attack the 28th of October, & was immediately sent to CCU (cardiac care unit) for 3 days. There are blockages in my heart, & they tried to open them with stents, but couldn't get to them (they were afraid they'd damage my heart more than it already is, and/or puncture something in there), so we're trying it with medicine. If anything else happens, I'm looking at open-heart surgery, which I am trying my best to avoid because I saw what my Dad went through with it....

The doctors told me I was very, very lucky I survived the last one, so it's been a wake-up call for me. Haven't had a smoke since the 28th of October, & I'm trying to watch what I eat, but I've still got a long way to go here, but I'm gonna do my best because my life literally depends on what I do from now on....

Back to the tones, the ampsim tones I'm talking about are Amplitube 3 & Recabinet 4 demo. I've said a few times I think the weak link in ampsims/modelers are the cabs, I personally think they've got the amps, pedals, etc pretty damn close, but the cab modeling is lacking. I dunno if anyone will ever get it completely right because of the complexity of the speaker movement, how hard it's being pushed, all the factors that make a real cab sound so good. But, I will say the 2 software sims I mentioned do a pretty damn good job IMO, gimme a little while & I'll upload a little clip. I'm sure you guys will be able to pick it out in an A/B thing, but for silent, easy-peasy recording, I'm impressed with 'em...

Miner, I had no idea about your heart situation.

Just so you know, I had a mild heart attack and quadruple bypass (open heart surgery) about 2 and a half years ago. Genetics (My Dad was a non-smoking, athletic gym teacher and died of a heart attack at 71 after having his first at 66), and smoking were the culprits. I was a big-time pot smoker. Problem is, I mixed it with tobacco. So, I was smoking the equivalent of 2 packs a day....un-filtered. Funny thing is, when I had my heart attack, I had cut my smoking down to less than half of that for about a year. But anyway, that's not the point.

The point is, I'm healthier than I have ever been. I can skip rope for 20 minutes non-stop now, I can out-run pretty much anyone I know. I box, I kick box, and my life is generally better than it has ever been. I was always athletic, have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, come from a boxing family, but that's what gave me a false sense of security and allowed me to think that I can smoke since I worked out and looked so healthy. Stupid is as stupid does.

Don't be afraid of the surgery if you need it. If anything, do a lot of research on the medication they try to to force you to take. I take absolutely none of the poison...I mean, medicine they prescribed to me. Watch out for statins, especially. Do a lot of research on them. I'm just saying that in case. They rubber stamp everyone with the same prescription and it's absolute bullshit. I've learned a lot about the Medical INDUSTRY (you're not a patient, you're a customer) in the last 2 years, and all I can say is, do your own research. But my main point is, if you need surgery, it's nowhere near the end of the world. It might actually be a great new beginning.

I stopped smoking the day I went to the hospital and haven't even had a craving since. Stop smoking and don't look back.

I wish you all the best, man.

Hey Shan!!!! I'm still kickin' man, just not as high, for now...Everything will work out dude, thanks!!!

Rami, my Dad had quintuple open heart surgery in '01, & the thing that got to me with that is how painful it was for him to heal up afterward. I know if I need the surgery to do it man, again, just the thought of my breastbone being sawed in half just gives me shudders....Thanks for the little talk man, that really helps a lot.... On the smoking thing, I smoked like a chimney up until Oct 28th, & honestly, it's not bothered me as bad as I thought it would've. But I also know if I pick those things up again, it's pretty much like throwing myself out a car at 75 mph, the end result ain't gonna be pretty....

My regular doc has already cut me back on some of the meds they gave me at the hospital, they had my blood pressure running about half of what it was supposed to be, & at times I'd almost pass out just from standing up. But, it seems he's on the right track because that hasn't happened since I saw him, so, far, so good on that....

I know what I've done for a living for 25 years hasn't helped things either. Being a miner operator, I've inhaled more dust than you guys could imagine, day after day, for years & years. That combined with my stogies & a generally un-healthy lifestyle has just plopped me on my ass for a little while. But, I will get back up, I'm already on my feet, I just need to keep taking one step at a time until I get myself back where I need to be....

Thanks again guys, really means a lot to me here, as I'm pretty much on my own after the divorce (fuck, if this would've happened while I was married, it'd been the same, if not worse than it is now...)...

I know I keep sayin' it, but I'm gonna upload those ampsim tones in a little while, I just keep getting sidetracked over here....They're nothing special (none of my tones are....lol), but I'm impressed with it because it's software...
