The New Tone Thread

I had an Arion Reverb. Piece o poo, but it did the trick for my surfabilly punk nonsense.

You want to talk about stupid money, here's one of my pedals that I still have that I bought for next to nothing back in the '70s.

Vintage 1960's Univox Superfuzz Fuzz Pedal Sounds Incredible | eBay

I used to plug my Radio Shack high impedance microphone into it to do the voice intro to Iron Man.

I have the grey version (sadly without the "Super Fuzz" plate or back plate) that I bought for $10 at a record store back in 1982 or so. Still have it (in fact, I had it hooked up to my '66 Bassman today and was playing slide through it) and was planning on uploading some tones with it for this thread. The only mod I made was adding a power jack so I could plug it into my pedal board. Maybe tomorrow when the wife leaves the house I'll do a few bits for the thread.

Man, those Ross Flangers are so big, and the same-side input/output hurts my feelings. The last thing I want is a bigger pedalboard. Dammit!

AND they have to plug into the wall .... no power supply or battery

I did laugh at the worrying about having a slightly bigger pedalboard though Mr. full-Marshall-stack!

:laughings:

I haven't really heard any better flangers out there though for what I like in a flanger.
But I don't have mine on my board. While I do have a pedalboard there's quite a few of my pedals I just carry loose either because I only use them live when I get the whim or a gig where I want full weaponry.

Otherwise they sit on the pedal shelf in one of my music rooms.

Haha, I'll fill a stage with amps, but having a big pedalboard goes against everything I stand for!

Mine is already cluttered. It doesn't have to be, but I have it set up to be functional for whatever amp I decide to use that day. I keep everything on there, even if it isn't gonna be used. Everyone that knows me points at my pedalboard and gives me a sarcastic "WTF Greg!" :laughings:

At the risk of destroying one's value, I wonder if one of those Ross Flangers could be rewired for 9v power and opposite side inputs and outputs. Better yet, maybe there's a clone.

Better yet, maybe there's a clone.
the Ross certainly could be rewired ..... you'd have to figure out what DC voltage it ends up with ..... there's no garuntee that it's 9.
It could be 12 or 18 or 24 or who knows?
But definitely at some point the AC gets converted to DC. So you'd have to find out.
As for moving the jacks .... that'd be easy.

But a clone is definitely the way to go.

I did a quick search ..... nothing immediately jumped out but this site might be useful: Ross flanger Reticon Sad1024

and apparently the old MXR flangers are a direct clone of the Ross. They're smaller but still have the plugs on the wrong side and require wall power.
Just google old MXR flanger.

also .... I have an Electric Mistress which is a chorus/flanger ..... I use it as a chorus ( sounds great ) and I've never even tried its flanging since I have a Ross. I'll see if it's worth considering.

yeah ..... rewiring the Ross would be a big-boy job. I think I could do it but I wouldn't want to. Mess up that chip and they're apparently hard to find and mybe 50 bucks if you find one.
The jack thing'd be easy but changing the power would not.

Like I said, I'll check out my Electric Mistress ..... they actually get decent reviews and I have one so we can hear it thru the same exact rig I ran the Ross thru.

I was gonna mention that the Electric Mistress also had a manual sweep. I almost bought one for that reason alone, but I really wasn't all that fond of the flanger sound. Very mechanical or robotic, to me anyway.

I have a newer one ..... no manual sweep ..... it's the Stereo Electric Mistress and it's a quite lovely sounding chorus.

But I just tried its flanger ...... sucks ..... not comparable to the Ross in any way ...... not even worth recording a clip of it.

It's been a lot of years since I played with one, but it wasn't stereo I don't think. And I don't even remember it having a chorus, but like I said, that was a long time ago.

Hmmm, my Danelectro cheapo Fab Flange is alright and it was only about 30 quid. Its a little bit robotic/metalic sounding if you go for quite high settings but its fairly natural if you're only going for a milder effect.

I suppose Flangers, like everything else when you're buying music kit, lead to diminishing returns as they get more expensive.

Well Lt Boob's Ross has *that* classic flanger sound. To me anyway. I think for me, the way I'd describe it is the flanger effect kind of morphs with the guitar signal to become one sound, whereas the lamer flangers kind of blanket over the top of it.

slowly catching up... nice flanger Bob - that beats the crap out of the ones I've tried in the last couple of years. I used to have an EH Electric Mistress in the 80s. I didn't use it much because it didn't take batteries - you had to plug it in. Seems like I remember it sounding too harsh anyway.

I'll put up a big muff clip this weekend (which, at the pace of this thread will seem totally non sequitor by then - I'm slowing down with age...)

the Ross does something called 'zero point' flanging ...... I'm far too lazy to look it up but apparently it's not that common.
