Here is a quick clip of my Carvin Legacy. I pick softly then hard to show how this amp responds to dynamic picking. No post processing was done other than adding a bit of reverb.

that's pretty impressive ....... gets super clean or really dirty just from how hard you pick ........ very cool.

Hey guys,

I'm doing an amp shootout today with some of mine but mostly my friend's gear. One guy forget to bring his Rectifier. Oh well.

Tiny Terror, JCM 800 Lead Series, DvMark Triple 6 and the AxeFX Ultra. I hope to add the Rectifier in the near future.

Ocnor: Sounds pretty good man, I've never played through a Legacy, but I have fiddled with the V3m a little...Your clip sounds good!!!

Schwarz: Cool dude, post us some clips when you can....cool pic too, but I'd be nervous as fuck sitting that gear in those chairs like that myself...What speakers are in cab on the floor???

Those are a bass cab. That's unrelated. Just happens to be on the floor.
The cab chair is a bit wobbly but the Marshall is sturdy. I think.

I wish I had the money to buy all that gear and a reason to buy it!

The jcm800 is interesting for sure. On the high send. Input, I can't turn the master past 1.5 without dying inside the room I'm recording in. Very loud. Absolutely rekt the U87. I had to set the gain to 0, put in the -10db pad and back it away ten centimeters just get it to not clip. The 57 is maybe a bit too grating for me but the amp itself is wonderful. The 87 makes it sound great on the low sensitivity input when you let it be clean-ish.

You need to get it to it's sweet spot on the volume dude...Yeah it's loud as fuck :D, but I'm betting $10 of my money against $1 of yours the recording will sound better if you wind it up a little...

You need a -20db pad minimum. not only to to decrease the signal but simply to put your preamps to work on your interface. I know because i just went through all this with my Blue Spark. Recording big ass amps at low levels is sort of pointless. Yea yea, there are no rules and stuff to recording and i totally get that and i am sure somewhere there may be an application for doing this but whats the point? Why not just grab a 5W Amp do the same thing for far less $$$

Good Learning experience though.

Schwarz:If the '57 is too grating/bright whatever, maybe try a different mic position and/or dial the amp in a little different dude...I'm pretty stoked to hear that amp myself...

Shan: I meant to reply to your question about the muddy/boxy sound around 300 - 600 hz you asked earlier...On the song I posted, I had to cut just a little out in that area to get it to sit in the mix how I wanted...I know I'm supposed to get it right at the source, but I couldn't dial it out otherwise, so I guess it's just one of them thangs....From what I've heard/read, Orange amps are pretty chunky in the lows, so that could be part of it too...There's nothing wrong with a little eq if needed dude....

The whole thing is for a paper I'm writing so I can't move the 57 in the name of science. The U87 can fly to the moon for all I care.
I always thought that the 800 would have more gain on tap. I know that a lot of its prominent users use overdrives or distortions on it but I thought that was more of a tonal thing.

The 2203 was never designed for high gain. They were designed for awesome.

It does that pretty well. It feels like a live amp to me because it's so loud. Makes you want to play it in a stadium.

Yea i did some digging around on the interwebs last night and you nailed it, its one of those 'thangs' HaHa. I thought about borrowing an EQ pedal from a buddy but I think that boxxy characteristic is actually part of the Cab's personality. And there is a very real possibility we haven't really got those V30's broekn in just right yet. Maybe? If that is also a thing. I gave the song a real quick listen this morning and what i did yesterday is lacking a bit of 'umph' in the balls/power department. I kind of expect more from that amp, so i am going back to the drawing board and going to tinker more with mic placement and where in my room i set my cab up in. I dunno. I am not opposed to using eq after i just hate like hell to trim fat if i don't have to. Thanks for the reply Miner i was worried it got buried.

this is a lot harder (read: fun) than the last time i mic'd a cab way back when when i was micing the peavys with a radio shack omni directionals lol.

Put the preamp vol on like 7-8 and the master vol around the same. I know, easier said than done, but that's where it's gonna really come alive. Hold on to something. It might be the loudest thing you've ever heard. Anything less and you're doing that wonderful amp a terrible disservice.

I didn't see any of this. You got a clip?

At home i do, I am at work presently. I would have posted last night but i am not joking when i say it is really weak sauce. I'll put one up later tonight. Like it sounds really kind of cool on it's own but isn't really what my ear wants to hear for the tune i am working on. It just needs a wee tiny bit more of something?? And i'll be happy. I'll chuck one up when i get home.

Schwarz: Greg's right man, that amp needs to have the power section cooking, & the only way to do that is to turn 'er up...Yeah, it'll be loud as fuck, but to me, there's nothing like a good tube amp hitting it's sweet spot, it's a magical thing...And, once you get it "there", you really don't need as much pre-amp gain as you'd think because of the sheer volume...

Shan: I've noticed about all my clips/tracks have that...I call it "cloudy" myself, because as soon as I do a little cut at that frequency, it's almost like boosting the high end...It helps bring out the clarity IMO...But, it would still be nice to not use the eq though, right??? It really doesn't matter what you have to do to get there, as long as the end result makes ya happy...
