I think maybe you and I have different ideas of painfully loud! I find my 15W amp cranked to be way too loud to be next to.
Yeah dude, until you try one of these amps you're talking about buying, you really can't know how loud they are...

Nice clips Greg, so you're gonna do some more of your "JVM tone-tour" today???:)

Ha thanks, no not today. I don't have the loud time today for that. I'll get back to the JVM tomorrow for sure.

That seems like a pretty good deal Jonny....like the Gerg mentioned, see if you can get it without the flight case, & it might knock a little off...

If you do buy that thing though, be prepared to know a different level of loud dude....Like Greg explained, it's not that much louder than a 15w amp technically, but in the room with it is a very different story....

Keep us posted dude, & if you do go grab that amp, post up some pics & clips!!!!

A guy is selling a Peavy Valveking 100 for 100 quid.
He says the tubes need replacing soon and should be about 80 quid.

I was thinking of getting it and flipping it but I can't find any information on what this thing is supposed to be worth.
Guys?

Guys?
Is it a 1 or a 2? I think the second version has more features. I don't really know anything about them. And WTF is a quid? Is that a pound? That's about $150 US. Super cheap for a 100w tube amp, even for a Peavey. A quick look on ebay shows them at around $300 asking price. Don't know what they actually sell for.

Yes Greg, a quid is a pound and yes a £ a watt for any valve amp seems very cheap! I am tempted myself except I have no use for one and need to de-clutter desperately anyway.
Peavey have a good name for reliability and I shall ask over at "the fretboard" and see what is known but basically if it runs and does not make bad noises or smells have his hand off.

Ships with 6L6s I see but if they need replacing I would think EL34 could be biased and a set might prove cheaper over here.

Dave.

We use 'quid' like you guys use 'buck', I guess.

I've emailed the fella selling the JCM800. The girlfriend is sort of on side - she was especially pleased when I explained that it's 5 times the power of my current most powerful amp. We'll see what comes from the guy selling it - 2/3 the price for a nearly new item isn't bad, I suppose, but I see 1980s models come up for less money (hard to tell the condition of those, though).

The guys at Fretboard have come back and told me what most of us thought. At that price a working valve 100watter is pretty much a steal.

Not, it seems quite as bombproof as the earlier US models but PDGood. Also not the greatest "tone monster" but a workmanlike amp and any 100 watter should be clean enough to take pedals well?

You see original 800s for less than that? Holy crap. Over here you might find one that's been beaten and modded start for about that price. Clean unmolested vertical input originals go for way more than that. Original Plexis - forget about it. At our prices, you'd be getting that amp for about half price new, and if it's as clean and unused as described, you're stealing that thing. Good luck dude, I'm excited for you. I don't think I have to say again that the 2203 is my most favoritest Marshall. You'll be getting one savage beast of a rock and roll amp. :)

Keep in mind that you might wanna upgrade your cab or get an attenuator. That amp can pop them speakers if you ever get to wind it up.

I don't ever see Valveking amps out and about. I suspect it's a budget tube head and probably sounds like it. Peavey isn't as popular over here as they used to be. The only big Peavey tube amps I ever see are the Triple X and the 6505. The 6505 is probably the actual "valve king" of the Peavey line up. It's a very nice amp and a lot of EVH wannabes and shredder types seem to like it.

That's probably what I see for the prices I'm talking about! I also see them for up to £1,500 occasionally.

Yeah, I'm not going to run it through my cab as it is. I'll have to look into some creambacks or G12T-75s. There's a brand over here similar to the one Miro was talking about above - I'll have a look at those as well. Have to wait for the amp seller to come back to me first.

Well if the deal happens and you want to upgrade speakers, keep the G12-65s in mind, or an equivalent clone. I think they are PERFECT for 2203/2204s.

Thanks - I was just looking at options. Would two 65W speakers be enough power handling? I'm unlikely to run at full volume and gain, so probably don't need 200W, but is 130W going to be cutting it too close?

Nah I think that would be totally fine. It's not like you're going to literally crank the amp all the time and play a whole set's worth of cranked songs at once through it.

there's one that a local guy uses but it's a 2x12 combo so I don't think it's the 100 watter.

It's hard to tell what it might sound like because the guy that uses it goes for ice-pick highs because he's a doofus.
I have to think it could sound at least decent if someone knew how to dial it in.

Cool, thanks. Anything I should watch out for, like should I look for or avoid vintage or new ones? What if I mix a G12H-75 Creamback and a G12-65 to get some variety? I'll only be close miking one speaker at a time, I'm not so bothered about the sound of the cab as a whole.

These are the ones, right:-

Celestion G12-65 Heritage 12 Guitar Speaker 15ohm

This website lists them as 15ohm?!

Yes that's one. Minerman uses that speaker and gets great sounds with it. Don't worry about the "15 ohm" rating. It's 16-ish enough, and that fluctuates anyway as you pump signal through it.

If you can find vintage 65s for the right price, get one. But those reissues will be great.

I think the Creambacks are great, but if you want variety and don't care about the cab sound on the whole, I'd say pair it with a Vintage 30. A G12-65 and Vintage 30 are quite different, two very distinct sounds, same power handling, and they both go very well with a 2203.
