The New Tone Thread

I really haven't had much time to play around with 'em all that much, but the setup I have for now is Mullard (V1), GE (V2), Sylvania (V3), & the Russian 6P3S power tubes. With the stock 6V6GT's (Ruby re-labeled by Egnater), the amp just "flubs" out too much, & loses clarity/definition for me when you push the master volume. With the 6P3S's, the higher it goes, the better it sounds (to me anyway). I've got the weekend to try out the rest of the power tubes, & will probably swap the 12ax7's around to see if that makes any difference......

Since changing all the tubes, it gave the little Tweaker a bit more gain, only need a boost now is to tighten up the low end (on the hot channel), so, I'm actually pretty happy with 'em. I think the different pre-amp tubes I have in it now are the reason for that, the guy(s) I got the tubes from said all the 12ax7's were high gain....The clean channel's gain with the new/different tubes is about like using the SD-1 as a boost before.....

This is my first time "tube rolling", but so far, I'm liking what changes the different tubes did to the amp......

And, of course, the best part about all these tubes is, they were free......:D

Clips are coming though, so you guys can tell me if it's just the "wow" factor or not.....

Hi Minerman and All; cool tubes! :)

Hey Greg,

What new amp did you get?

Can you isolate some tones and put them up?

I have a real cool Vox and I would like to hear what kind of tone you are getting.

If you get time could you please post up a Marshall with it too, for comparison?

I'm getting there myself, I am spending at least an hour or two a day getting my shit back together in my little studio.

Today I went to GC and plunked down on a new Mb0x interface, the Fuckusrite 2 i 2 I was using just ain't cutting it,
and this new unit is designed more for using with my particular DAW software,
plus there's a big forum to go bitch on (and get help) if it doesn't work right. :cursing:

I saw all that, that's my amp if I ever buy a big one. :thumbs up:
I mistook Vox for Vox guitar amp in the mp3 clinic, I think the poster was actually referring to voice / vocals.
Doh!

Lol. Yes, "vox" is often used in place of "vocals".

It was Lt. Bob, I should have known. :cursing:
I also should have known that you probably didn't buy a Vox.
I guess the drugs needed to wear off some more, I'm fine now.

I'd buy a Vox. I don't want one, but I do like them. I think I like them better than Fender amps. A Vox with a tremolo would be my choice for a surf amp.

I still like mine, the only thing is, even at only 15 watts I still have to blast it to get into the juicy break up.
The little 5w Marshall makes a much more suitable living space amp.

OK guys,
Here's a couple clips, with the volume rolling thing, gradually all the way up, & the last part of both clips has my SD-1 as a clean boost.....

There isn't a lot of difference in the clips tone-wise, but I think a lot of that is the mic placement (the feel & saturation of the amp is a little different with the different power tubes), I just hit record after swapping the power tubes.....clips are completely dry, no eq, nothing, just my Strat (stock Fender bridge HB) > Tweaker > V30 > '57 mic > interface......

Lemme know what ya think.....

I like the the second tube for clean. I pretty much prefer the first once everything starts getting gritty, though.

I wasn't expecting my ears to hear a difference,
but I found that the first clip sounds warm,
the second clip (RCA's), more on the brittle side.

OK guys, here's a short clip of a song I've been working on, it's only about a minute long, but it's still a work in progress.....

I'm really happy with the 6P3S & 12ax7 tubes I got this week, lemme know what you think about this clip. Of course, it's not finished yet, but I think it's sounding ok so far.....

sounds pretty good to me ...... some of your best sounds so far methinks.

Thanks Bob,
I'm still learning the amp/cab/mic thing, & it's a little different for me because I use a home-made ISO box, but I'm getting better at it I think....the Tweaker does a pretty good job at vintage type tones, & the tube swap made it even better (to me anyway.....)....

Still looking at a new/different amp too, something that'll give me a more modern type sound.....waiting to see what Marshall has up their sleeve, but it could be a while since they just released the Slash amp (which I'd probably buy if it came in a head version, I don't need another V30/cab.....)......have to wait & see I suppose.....

Thanks again, off to work I go.....

That lead tone is awesome, Miner.

I ran across this clip of a Matchless Avalon 30 that seems to have pretty good tones.
It's their discount model.

The good stuff starts around 2:15:

Hey guys,
Bumping this to the first page!!!

Here's a sloppy clip I did today just messing around, showing some of the tones in the DSL-1 H & V30 cab.....

First part is clean/green channel, last bit of it has as Boss SD-1......

Second part is the red/od channel, starting with the gain on about 1, & eventually cranking it all the way. The very last bit has my POD X3Live ran through the loop, with a boost, phase & delay.......

Lemme know what you guys think.....

Not bad. Sounds pretty much like a DSL. Very midrangey. It seems a little light in the bottom though with the cleaner settings and it gets pretty mushy as the gain goes up.

On the big DSLs I always like "Ultra Channel" Lead 1 with the gain somewhere between 2 and 5. Nice drive while still maintaining clarity.

Thanks Greg,
I had to upload a lower bitrate mp3, SC cut off part of the one I did today, it's the same clip(s), just 192kb.....

Yeah, the new amp has way more gain than I need, I was just showing how much it had, I keep my gain anywhere from 1-5 most of the time, like you said, still cruncy/overdriven, but retains clarity. Too much on the gain knob with this amp, & it does get pretty flubby, the Tweaker does too on the "hot" channel.....of course, a boost pedal tightens it up & makes it a little better...

Overall, I love the new amp though, it's got that Marshall-y mid-range you mentioned, plus this clip was with my V30 cab, so it has a little more than the GB speaker.....

I think I'm set on amps for a while, between the DSL & T15, I can get pretty much any tone I want, & the POD works great in the loop of the DSL (it's really noisy & sucks the tone with the T15 using the 4 cable method, dunno why, but it does....)....

I think the next thing I'm gonna do is either upgrade the pickups in my guitars, or buy another guitar, haven't decided yet....

Thanks again man!!!!!

I suspect your Tweaker is about to get really lonely. Lol.
