The New Tone Thread

Thanks for the kind words about my wife guys, & again, so far, so good!!!!!

Here's a few tones I recorded this weeked, nothing special, just some shitty playing through my Tweaker, Greenback cab (ISO box), & '57 mic about an inch from the grill, about where the cap meets the cone.....

Strat neck pickup, going for a SRV/Texas blues crunch thing. Tweaker settings were Vintage, volume: 8-9, USA (fender tonestack), treble: 8, mid: 5, bass: 7, clean, gain: 10, bright, tight. I had the guitar's volume rolled off to around 7-8, & the tone about the same (7-8):

Ibanez bridge pickup, copied Greg's volume knob thing, the very last part has a Boss Super OD as a clean boost, you can actually hear me step on the pedal. This is the "Clean" channel of the Tweaker with the 5751 tubes:

Modern, volume: 6-7, Brit (marshall tonestack), treble: 9, mid: 5, bass: 10, clean, gain: 10, bright, tight

Same thing on this clip, Ibanez volume knob thing, but using the "Hot" channel of the Tweaker, & the very last part has the Boss OD as a clean boost:

Modern, volume: 6-7, Brit (marshall tonestack), treble: 9, mid: 5, bass: 10, hot, gain: 10, bright, tight

With the 5751 tubes, the "clean" channel has enough gain for me, & I can always use a boost pedal if it isn't. The "hot" channel just has too much gain unless you turn it down, it's just too much. It looses clarity & definition with the gain dimed on the "hot" channel......

So, I like the new tubes quite a bit, to me there's a really noticeable difference in the sound, not a whole lot more gain, but enough to where I can notice the difference......

Really happy with my amp/cab setup at the moment, wish I'd bought the T15 to start with instead of the Blackstar, but live & learn......

Lemme know what you guys think......off to work I go......

Wow, those all sound good to me. I really like the "clean" channel clips, although it aint clean at all. You can hear the Greenback "flub" out a little on the hot channel with the volume up, I like that though. I think they're all good and usable. Nice work. Try that same test with the V30 and see what you get. I bet the "hot" channel with those same settings will sound tight and crunchy through the V30.

So what about feedback? With that iso cab are you able to get any controlled feedback/sustain stuff going on?

Thanks Greg,

I don't like the "hot" channel with the gain cranked at all, it's just too much for me (I never thought I'd say that, too much gain....:D), the way it "flubs" out I really don't care for. Turn the gain down a little & the "flub" doesn't happen, it's like having 2 amps in one (technically it is I suppose....), I read somewhere a guy did a mod to his T15 to where he could use a footswitch for the "hot/clean" setting, which would be cool for a gig, but doesn't interest me really, as I only do the recording thing...

The "clean" channel is great, & even more so now with the 5751 tubes, they add just the right amount of gain (for me anyway) compared to the stock EH/Egnater tubes. Makes me wanna buy some more/different tubes, tube rolling might make enough difference in this little amp that I don't buy another head....

On the feeback/sustain question, no, that won't happen with the lid closed/sealed, but it will work with it open, I was moving the mic position for these clips, & left the guitar leaned against my desk, hitting the open strings, & it was feeding back, so if I ever need that, I just have to take the lid off, but will most likely need the place to myself, I'm still amazed at how much the cheap-ass box I made cuts the noise level......

And I just got done switching the cabs out (took probably 5 mins at the most...), so I'm gonna try to do the v30 clips today so I can get some feedback/pointers with the new tubes through the Vintage 30 speaker......

Thanks again!!!!!

OK, so I did another quick recording of the Ibanez & T15, this time using the Orange V30 cab.....exact same amp settings as the Greenback clips, & I did my best to get the same mic position......

Here's the "clean" channel:

"Hot" channel:

I noticed a pretty big difference in the tone, & to my surprise, the V30 has a little more bottom than the GB, you can hear it in the clips (nasty resonant freq.....could be the mic position, the ISO box, could be anything, but this was just a quick-n-dirty test clip thing, so it really doesn't matter......)....

The "hot" channel still "flubs" out with the gain maxed even through the V30, I'm starting to think the tubes may have something to do with this, as I'm still running the stock power tubes that came in the amp. I think my next "thing" will be some different tubes, pre & power, as I noticed a pretty big difference just swapping 2 of the pre-amp tubes over the weekend.....I had a few Russian 6P3s power tubes picked out, but backed out because of my wife's surgery ($$$$)......Once I get the master volume past about 6, the amp compresses the sound a lot, maybe a different set of power tubes is what I'm after.....

Lemme know what you guys think, don't pay any attention to the shitty playing, again, this is just a quick-n-dirty tone test.....

Oh yeah, lovin' the little Tweaker amp setup I have, pretty versatile little amp IMHO.......

Cool. I like the GB clips better, but the V30 sounds great. The V30's bottom seems more "woofy" and I'd attribute that to mic position more than anything else. The bottom line, they both sound great, and one on each side would kill in a mix.

there great clips minerman, they all sound darned good, personally i prefer the clean channel when you use hot it seems its lopping off some top end and does go a little muggy :) really are great sounds id be well happy with those :D

Thanks guys,
These clips are pretty shitty playing-wise, but I think the setup I have definitely has some useable tones to be had....especially the clean channel with a boost, the "Brit" tonestack does sound a little "Marshally" to me, but I'm probably just partial because it's my setup.....

I'm gonna try to get some different tubes still, & I'm still waiting to see what Marshall comes out with besides the 5w Slash combo amp, if they come out with just the Slash head version, I might buy it, but dunno......I've heard they've got some more low watt stuff coming, but don't know for sure, I suppose I'll just keep adding/modifying the setup I have for now until then.....

A few different sets of power & pre-amp tubes, & maybe a couple more mics would be a cheaper route for now.........& yes, I'm a cheap bastard.....
:D

Thanks again!!!!!

Good stuff coal miner. Don't get hung on the details - die by the fuckin' sword.

Finally caught some air with this Full tone Octafuzz pedal I've been messing around with. I wanted to get a searing 70's solo sound out of it, but it has been really fussy about the input. This is with the neck pickup with the guitar volume down a bit, which it seems to like, and then through a full drive 2 on the vintage setting into an old Gibson Skylark practice amp. At first, the fuzz is off, but I turn it on for the single-note part

Minerman, I'm gonna listen to your clips when I get back to my house

sounds great minerman -- I think my favorite was the "clean" GB as well. I've got an orange V30 cab, and so far the orange amp head I use it with seems to be well matched, but I haven't tried it with anything else, really. Still no greenbacks for me :( - I found some on craigslist, but I think they were gone by the time I reached out.

It sounds like it's got a bit of ring modulation happening in there.
As always, minerman, good stuff, and engaging, too.

Wow, that's pretty thick and wild. It's definitely got a certain "vibe" to it. I can't say that it's a tone I'd get into, but it's pretty cool. How's the Marshall?

Cool sound antichef, vintage vibe happenin' there man, more of a Hendrix type sound to my ears.....would work well in a mix IMHO, especially for a lead tone, splashed with a little 'verb & delay, would sound great....

On the Greenback thing, you can buy the cab I have for $300 new, Randall RV112GB Guitar Speaker Cabinet at AMS It's the Chineese Greenback, & I've heard different opinions going either way, some say there's no difference & some say there's a big difference between the speaker I have & the one that's made in England, myself, I really don't care as I'm not a "cork sniffer/tone snob", I just wanted a GB to add to my "arsenal" of tones, & can definitely tell a difference between the two I currently have.....

Thanks for the listen/feedback on the tones guys, but I think Sky Blue Lou has put a bug in my ear with his last post in this thread......"die by the fucking sword"......I think what that means to me, is I've spent enough time chasing tone, I need to get off my ass & finish up a bunch of songs with the new setup I have, it's been over a year since I started this tone quest, & for now, I think it's about as good as it's gonna get without spending any more $$$$$$..........for now......I'm pretty happy with the Tweaker amp, it's really versatile & has some great sounds, I have a Greenback & V30 cab now, home-made ISO box so I can crank up the T15 & not piss off the whole house, there are a few things I'd like to have right now that don't cost a lot like a few more/different tubes for the Tweaker, & a couple more mics, but with what I have, I'm able to get really useable tones that would fit well in a mix.....

There are a few things I'm gonna buy for my setup in the next little while, but won't cost that much.........
Russian 6P3S power tubes (found 4 of 'em for about $40-50, including shipping....)
Sennheiser e609 (about $100 or so.....)
Celestion G12T75 ( if the guy still has it, he priced it to me for $50....)

I'm gonna order the power tubes toward the end of the week, but it'll be a couple/few weeks before they arrive (shipping from the Ukraine...).....

Then, there are a lot of things I'd like to have, but cost quite a bit more, like a Marshall head (still waiting to see what they come out with this year, could be summer before they announce anything else.....the Slash combo would be cool to have, but I don't want/need a combo, I already have 2 - 1x12's.......), some "proper" stomp boxes like the Bogner Red (which cost almost as much as the amp I have....), & some more distortion/od pedals, modulation & delay stuff.....

Thanks again for the listens/comments guys, keep the tones coming too, I've learned a lot here, as a year ago I was an ampsim guy (which are useable also, everything has it's place....), but have switched over to the real deal & love it....Granted, I don't have a 100w Marshall like the Gerg, but I've got about a grand in my amp/cab setup altogether, & I'm pretty happy with it right now.....

My "recording studio" computer is fucked.
I think it got a virus and I am going to have to reinstall W7 and start over completely. :cursing:

There ya' go. ;)

Lt. Bob: five dolla'....cool man, I'd pay that for admission to the thread, I've learned way more than five dolla' worth since I've been a part of this......

Sam: Is there any way you can back up your files you wanna keep???? If you can, there's hope (asumming you have songs/tracks/stuff you wanna keep.....).....I'm overdue for a re-load myself, I don't have a virus, but I usually re-install my OS about once a year, it makes your pc run faster/smoother......sorry to hear you got a virus, but there's nothing like a new installed OS dude, it may be a blessing in disguise.....keep us posted.....

Lou: Thanks again dude, I'm gonna keep that in my mind from now on.......

Hi miner, I think all my files are backed up already ( I use carbonite for work so I added it to my computer), I will just have to figure out how to reinstall a shitload of software!

The computer itself won't let me open "my computer," or "control panel" or update and av software, so I think it is pretty much toast...
