The New Tone Thread

I've been back in wham-bam-blazing powerchord mode (where I belong) for a little while now, so here's some lead-ish tone trying a few pedals. I dusted off the Tube Screamer and my old crusty ProCo Rat and re-visited the tune that started all of this tone thread craziness.

There's 3 sections to this clip - just amp - Tube Screamer - ProCo Rat. TC Electronics Flashback Delay in the fx loop.

Here we go....
Les Paul bridge Burstbucker 3 > JCM900 MKIII > Klops drum cab (just kidding) Avatar 2x12 Celestion V30 > 57 on-axis 1" off grill at edge of dustcap.
Presence and tone controls - 5
Gain - 5
Master Vol - 4

Tube Screamer - Drive 8:00 - Tone 12:00 - Level 2:00
Rat - Distortion 9:00 - Filter 12:00 - Vol 12:00

shit on 10th avenue

I understand having techs and stuff, but does he really need his tech to plug his guitar in for him? Ha, the Edge got suckered into buying a Variax.

I like the Tube Screamer section the best. The other two weren't bad, I just liked the way the mids sounded with the TS.

I was hoping to do some more clips this weekend...just never had a chance, but I did spend time doing some "musical speaker swaps" with a few of my amps. Been wanting to make some speaker changes and shuffle things around a bit...so I had time to at least do that this weekend. So when I get a chance...I'll have clips with new amp/cab and speaker combinations.
I think all of them are a good match up and even an improvement over a couple of previous combinations.

You have mentioned several times about how you find the tube screamer "dated."
I'm not so sure, it sounds like it is still a very serviceable effect pedal.
I've got each of those pedals as well, nice tones, I don't even
have a preference. If I had to choose it might be the Rat surprisingly.
It was less over the top, yet still added some great harmonics.
I find that pedal is the easiest to "get away from me," and become a
bit too much. Nice job.

Thanks fellas.

I guess it's the whole 80's stigma with the Tube Screamer that turns me off. It sounds like the 80's to me, and that aint a good thing. Lol. I know they go back before that, but whenever I look at that thing, visions of Dokken dance through my head and I wanna kill myself.

I find the Rat to be mostly just ridiculous. A little goes a long way with that thing. I liked it back when I was a kid and it was my only "dirt" pedal going into a clean amp, but I don't like it too much as just flavor into an already crunchy amp setting.

Cool Greg, I like the TS best myself, like Miroslav, I like what it adds to the mids a lot. I personally don't like the way the Rat sounds, but it's all personal prefrence......

I'm still on the hunt for another amp, the Blackstar is ok, but it's just too dark sounding. I've read lots of tips on it, like using a stomp eq in the loop, but really, I want an amp that has the sound I'm after without adding anything, just the guitar & amp......I've also read about doing mods to the Blackstar, but again, I'm looking for an amp that has the sound I'm after right out of the box......

I know what you mean. I feel the same way. But....I got an MXR 10-band and put it in the loop and it made a huge difference for the better. You can really fine tune the sound after the pre-amp stage with more accuracy than the typical tone knobs on the amp. It's also a fantastic clean boost if you wanna put it in front of the amp.

I say get one and try it out. It works wonders. It might be all you need and it's a hell of a lot cheaper (mine was 80 bucks new) than buying amp after amp looking for the right one.

Thanks Greg, I've read about using the eq in the loop, suppose I'm gonna have to buy a few pedals. I may even be able to find something a lot cheaper at one of the local pawn shops.....

The Greenback cab made a pretty big difference, but it's still not what I'm after. On the up side though, when I stack my combo on top of the cab, & use both speakers at the same time, it actually sounds pretty awesome for such a small setup....But, again, I'm still chasing a sound, so it's back to the hunt.......actually, it's off to work right now..

Hey Bob,
Are you going to get that H&K Tubemeister amp now?
I keep seeing the ads for it.
You're gigging like mad, it's time to go for it, right?

Thanks fellas.

Yup it's great with the Vox when I want to play at low volume.

I'm carrying the flag for drummers everywhere.

You can make jokes about us not being musicians, you can complain about us being late for everything.....but two facts will always be true: we are the only members of the band that can actually win a bar fight, and we will fuck your wives and girlfriends and think nothing of it! Drummers unite! :D

Hey Bob,

?
nah .... I have 14 amps ...... kinda hard to justify buying another when we're trying to not lose the house.

But I MIGHT sell some of mine and then get one ..... all my amps are too much for most of my gigs. I really donb't wanna sell my Mark V or my Blue Angel though ....... maybe that Hot Rod deVille. And the Ampegs ...... and the Marshall. But then ..... every guitarist should have a Marshall ....... man ............
