The original Mr. Nice Guy
So... a new Musician's Fiend (hehe) catalog arrived, and MXL has a new LDC named the "Cube"... instead of a long, rounded body, it has a somewhat short, squarish body. Has anyone tried one of these out yet? Is it anything special? the price is $99.99. Inquiring minds want to know...

Yawn... ;)

Pardon me while I "hustle" back to the topic at hand - anyone tried the MXL Cube yet? How'd it sound?

Apparently, MXL has a whole shitload of new mics, when you do a search on Musician's Friend for all MXL products. I imagine many of them are part of their standard line, rebadged for MF. If I go to the AES show in October, I'll try to find out more about them.

Harvey, if you come to AES stop by and see me!

Where is AES this year? I was at the one in San Fran a few years ago.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the same capsule that's in the 990. It does have that Lost in Space look though! :D

The capsule in the 990 isn't center tapped. It can't be the same. This looks like an attempt to emulate the Neumann TLM49 grill, at least in size. Michael's right in that the MXL is single mesh.

Returning to the issue at hand unfortunately the mics won't be available until 9/8/06 so anybody who says that they have tried them is either a real insider or full of shit.

Ah yes, good point.

Yup, I just talked to Wayne Freeman at MXL, who told me that they haven't even received the first shipment yet. I think the Cube mic is similar to the MXL V3, as far as internal stuff goes. The 190 looks like a really new model and I'm looking forward to hearing it as soon as it's available.

The other exciting MXL news (for me anyway) is the new omni capsules available for existing 603's and 991's. A matched pair for a whopping 50 bucks.
