Yeah - I noticed they dropped the price on the 190 also (now $149.99). Anyone try one of those? How'd it sound?

And still

no one has answered the OP.

Ya gotta love this place.

...is anybody here old enough to remember the Edsel?...

Oh NO you didn't just say that!

Anyways, think of all the storage space you'll save if this square mic thing catches on.

WTF? Now, 9 hours later, they're $79.99.

Sheesh! I guess I shouldn't have said anything!

I bet punkin is right - they'd have to honor the price (I think) if you called and mentioned the pricing issue...

They bumped the price back up to $199.99 today, one day after they listed it at $149.99...

I still haven't heard from anyone that's tried/heard this Cube mic, but the price went back down to $69.99. ;)

Looks like we all know better these days then to spend our money on $69 mics, no matter how curious.

I heard Scooter Libby bought MXL Cubes for the NSA spying program though. Well, maybe I heard that he did. Actually, I'm not so sure I remember now. In fact at this point I'm quite sure I have no recollection.

:D :D :D How true!

While we're being truthful, I will admit that I bought a $69 LDC, but not an MXL Cube.

Just watch - the one I bought probably causes warts, while this MXL Cube winds up being compared to "a vintage U47 with a NOS Telefunken"... or not... ! ;)

Regardless, I'd still like to hear someone's review on that MXL Cube.

Aaaaaaauuuuuuuurrrrrrgh!!

I know it! ...I just know it!!!

You guys are going to keep this up and I'm going to end up buying one, just to see!

OK!...but I'm using it on SNARE DRUM!!! :D :D :D

Hey. Let's do a MXL Cube group buy. If 14 of us pitch in $5 each we can buy a single Cube and then mail it between us. It will only take 15 minutes use to figure out it's a 990.

:D :D :D

On a slightly more serious note, I think I read somewhere where the 990 has a 3/4" diaphragm, where I think the spec for the Cube says it has a 1" diaphragm...

Well, guess what just arrived from MXL? That's right, a pair of "Cubes" and a 190. Tonight after some sessions, we set up the Cube, the 190, and our Studio Projects T3 (as our reference), and put them all thru their paces. I listened on headphones (a pair of Sennheiser HD201's) while Alex listened over our big JBL system. No eq or effects. Here are our first quick "impressions":

The T3 always sounds nice and has a nice high end sheen, without sounding edgy, and as usual, it sounded great, with proximity starting at about 18" out and becoming more pronounced as I moved in closer.

We switched to the Cube, and Alex' first comment was that it sounded like the T3, but I disagreed; I heard a sharp high end peak which made it sound very bright. After switching back and forth between the T3 and the Cube, Alex heard it too. Proximity effect kicked in from around 12" out.

I thought the Cube might be useful as a drum overhead mic; Alex thought it might do well on guitars, and he plans to try it out over the weekend on different sources. It's very bright to me, but damn it's cheap for a LDC mic. The cage is very open and has a large mesh. Noise was low enough, no hum pickup, and the Cube has a pretty open sound.

Back to the T3 and switching with the MXL 190. The 190 has a smoother warmer sound without much of any peaks that I could hear. But either the proximity roll-off switch was stuck in the on position, or this mic doesn't have a lot of proximity effect. I'll check the switch tomorrow. Overall it's a pretty nice mic, but it does overload pretty easy up close. I didn't try the -10dB pad to see if that would fix it.

It's a little smoother than the T3; it doesn't have that high end sheen like the T3 has. But it's not a "dark" mic either. Alex said it reminded him of the "N" word. It definitely has a M149 kinda vibe to it. The new shock mount is amazingly well crafted and works for the Cube as well.

More testing to come. These are just first impressions.
