if you havent seen my past posts, im looking for an ok-quality 4 mic drum setup for my 5 piece set (with ride, 2crashes, hihats, and a splash), and hopefully a setup where the mics could double as guitar and vocal mics.
4 q's:
1)up untill now ive been thinking of buying 2 sm57's and possibly using an RS mic on the bass as a trigger, or using sm57 bass and snare, RS overheads.
i just saw the fox package from a recent post and was wondering how i could use it. from it i'd get much better vocals, better overheads, a little bit worse of a snare mic, then i'd use an RS trigger on bass. would this trade-off be worth it?
2) would the fox mics work well with guitar/vocals?
3) how would the RS bass trigger and 2 sm57's as overheads sound?
and
4) how do you make sure that the overheads dont only pick up the cymbals? if im using them for toms as well, would i boost the lows and lower the mid and highs on the mixer?
thanks -Nate

(the reply below is speaking from no actual experience whatsoever, but since nobody else has replied.... :) )

Nate - the Fox mic package should work fine for what you're asking about. I'd take the balls :D off the 2 mxl 1000's that you get, then they're supposedly supposed to sound just like the 603s, which sound great. Those could be used as overheads for drums, acoustic guitar, and maybe vocals w/ a good pop screen...It's a good deal, so I'd definately get it and just screw around with placement, etc. If you can afford it, I'd still pick up a 57 also. Hope this helps a little.

You know you can buy the Shure package for drums for $299 from some dealer in Philly. It includes 3 57s and a Beta 52 for kick. You could get a couple of the Marshall 603s for overheads and have a great drum set up for about $500 or a little less. The Shure package also comes with clips for the 57s to mount to snare and toms.

ok, i think im gonna go with the fox mxl, because what i can for the price is much better. (149 for the package of 3 mics, 160 for 2 sm57s) im just not sure about setup on the drumset and electric guitar. as much as i'd like another sm57 (especialy for snare and guitar), i probably wont be getting one anytime soon after getting the mxl package.
here's what i'll need to record:
drums
vocals
guitar and bass at same time
some sax (DMB)

and i'll have 2 MXL 1000's, 1 Fox MXL, and 2 radio shack cheapies, at about 25 bucks a piece.
drums: 1000's on overheads (why take the cap off again?), Fox on bass i guess, would that work?
guitar and bass: both 1000's? does the cap need to be off?
vocals: 1000
sax: dunno
does this sound good? i'll be putting em through a behringer mixer to my comp's Esoniq card, using either n-track or something else. whats a little better than n-track, but still easy to use? n-track is pissing me off. thanks, -Nate

Sounds pretty good to me...You'll just have to mess around with the mics after you get them. For drums, i'd do like you said, fox on bass, 1000's as overheads. The cap doesn't have to be off, but according to Harvey's ears, it'll sound better, so it's worth a shot. Just make sure you have a pop filter in front when you're trying it on vocals...

For bass, try just going direct, you'll probably get a better sound. Or have 1 track direct mixed w/ another track w/ one of the mics...It's all about experimentation, you never know what'll sound good till you try it out :) Same w/ guitar, you'll only have 2 different types of mics, so try them both out, see which sounds best...Good luck!

Id double mic your guitar amp...close with the fox and from a few feet away with the mxl1000, ball off....put them both into the mixer...on the mixer while recording, pan one left and one right and set up the software to record a stereo track to two separate tracks (N-Track does this)...for the mix, you can blend the two as needed.....

cool, i like that plan. what's a program thats similar and just as good as n-track? i dont like it.... what i really need is a damn compressor!! the ones that come with n-track pause every 10secs cause they're demos, does anybody know where i could find one?

yea, ive checked through like 10 of those links, no compressors....i was just wondering what you guys use?
