i'm not endorsing using effects, though i don't really care either way. my point is simply that different techniques are possible that may have likable results depending on what one wants.
I never heard of people actually using effects to sound like theyre screaming - but hey i dont listen to much metal.
by FAKING IT, i mean screaming from your head and upper throat (Like craig nicholls from the vines) as opposed to that chesty deathy low yell you're talking about.
THat being said it IS all about the music so its entirely up to the individual i suppose.
By faking it I didn't mean using effects...I don't really even see how it would be possible and sound realistic. I mean by singing from your throat and distorting it using your voice to sound as it would if you were screaming. It may turn out better even.
Huge guitar sounds can come from small amps. You dont need a stack to capture huge sounds on tape. Same thing with vocals. Just impersonate a scream and with a little practice you will sound like satan. HA HA HA HA ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!
Again listen to DANI Filth.
I think you should listen to a lot of screamers and screetchers for pointers. I went to a Yeah Yeah Yeahs concert last night. You should check out their vocalist (even tho she's a woman...)
I think the best vocal 'scream' perfomance ever has gotta be John Lennon doing Twist and Shout. Its not 'proper' screaming like in metal which all sounds the same - the guy really sounds like hes in pain and trying to shake some demons. How the hell do you learn to sing like that? I know it was the end of of the session and his voice was shot and he had a cold that day but... fuck me... how do you get that level of desperation in a vocal?
One time , I punched myself in the Balz , I could scream and cry , but I could only sing with a high pitched "Micheal Jackson" kinda of voice for a while.....
