Yeah, I usually use both when wiring a typical guitar. The gun is great for the backs of pots or braided shielding because of it's heat. I have found the gun to be a little hot for mini toggles and 4 conductor wire though. A newbie is probably better off with just a 25-40 watt iron just because of the lack of experience to know when the joint is 'fluid' vs burning up a part or melting wire insulation.
