Teac a-3440 - clicking and not playing!
Hey guys,

So, I'm in the process of trying to get my machine in top working condition, just replaced all the capacitors on each channel but as I reassemble it I've run into a few problems. First, I blew a fuse, took a while to figure this out since I tested it and everything seemed to be working, but replaced all 7 just to be sure. I've recently replaced the capstan belt (less than 15 hours of use) I do need to replace the counter belt but that can't be the problem.

When I put it in play the pinch roller doesn't go right up to the capstan and the fly reels keep clicking. It does FFWD and RWD.
Here's a video of the problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86eXtQg0_co

PLEASE! Any help would be very much appreciated! I'm attaching the service manual and parts list if it helps.

Hmmm, very strange. I once had this machine but never saw that behavior. The only thing I can say is try putting the hubs back on and load a tape and see of the same thing happens, also check the cuing lever. Are you sure you put everything back together ok? I seem to recall that some boards are not keyed and can be inserted the wrong way, this happend to me and blew some transistors,I later fixed it, but that magic smoke was not fun to see!

I'd like to know what's going on there too, just to know. I don't know if this is possible but did you try pulling the pinch roller back or just holding it back in edit like mode to see if the captan keeps turning after pushing play? It does seem like something is put on wrong.

teac a-3440 reel motor problem ? relay ?

The capstan is turning when there is tension, so no problems there. The only parts I dissembled were the individual channel cards (pres) which are located on the bottom of the machine, It seems as though the pinch roller is touching the capstan every time the clicking sound happens.

In the back there seems to be some sort of mechanism which doesn't stay engaged, here's my view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHrJjMQr5iM

Man, someone here has to know what's going on with this. Where is everybody? So the capstan is turning but the brakes keep trying to engage. Maybe something with the brake relay?

Can you open that relay box and spray it with deoxit? I don't know, just grabbing straws.

Did your machine operate well prior to you servicing it?

Blew a fuse then replaced them?

I'd check the P/S voltages to see if they're all there & in the range they should be in. Sounds like a power supply problem to me, tho' the simple modification done can not automatically be ruled out as a cause. Something could be shorted. Shorting once & blowing a fuse could potentially blow out a power supply rail, where a replacement fuse wouldn't blow after the damage is done. Symptoms sound like a voltage can spike up but not sustain. To me that wreaks of a power supply fault. Just MO or 2¢ worth of O.;)

2 words: sweet beats:eek:;)

It sounds like the Play mode is trying to get voltage. I wouldn't be surprised if he connected a board in the wrong pin alignment and connected come components to ground.
We won't know unless he chimes in.

Hello all,

I have the same problem. I have a Teac A-3440 4 track that occasionally stops when playing. Then it automagically start again, and stop, and starts etc. untill I press the stop button.

I have the unit for a few days now. I have had to replace the capstan belt, but otherwise it is in pristine condition. No scratches at all. The heads look like new. It belonged to an audio-enthusiast. So far it has performed very well and most of the times I've used it throughout the day without any problems. But it has happened on 2 occasions. And tonight the rewind button is unresponsive. Even without tape (And yes, I lift the guide roller to make the capstan turn). There is no sticky tape issue here. :(

I really think it has something to do with the relais, and I think they may need cleaning to end this erratic behavior. Does anyone know where the rewind-relais is located? Or maybe someone has a link to a service manual? The link above in this thread doesn't work.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm in love with this piece of equipment already! The sound quality is outstanding! :D

Philip.

Update: after a few weeks of use, it seems to have disappeared.
