we don't need rest!!
so......how do I convince myself to sell my Tascam 38, 1/2" reel to reel 8 track that I never use anymore...?.....and my closet full of 1/2" tapes??

.....and my Tascam 22-2 half track with even a larger collection of 1/2 track masters?? For the $200 I see these go for at Ebay, I might as well keep it for the occasional "stroll down memory lane" once every other year or so.

man...and I bought these puppies new too. I guess my PII 233 is worth less however:(

I'd say keep it. They're still good units,...

and realistically, you'll never get your money back out of it. At the prices you'd get on this type of gear, it's not only sad & shameful, it's almost insulting. It's like you practically have to pay someone to take it away.

Anyway, I don't know what you record on currently, but I have a Tascam 38, among other things, and I'd never part with it, in fact, just the opposite, I'm stocking up on tape.

These units might be old, but they still make great recordings, within the scope of their own technology. There's nothing wrong with producing cuts on a 1/2" 8-track, even if only once in a while, just for fun. I think your best value is in tape, and spending more hours on the older rig, once in a while.

That's what I do, and I assure you, I would not recommend you do anything that I would not do myself.

I know what you mean. I have an MSR-16 that I love, but I've thought of getting rid of it since I don't use it as much as it deserves. If I sold it, I could never get enough money to justify selling it in the first place. So what I think I'll do is keep it, and at some point when I can afford the necessary gear, I'll sync it up and use that too. That would be sweet. I just can't bring myself to sell it!

One more thing...I'm also hesitant to get rid of it because I think I'm addicted to the smell of the analog tape! That and I just love the feeling of cueing up a reel of tape. That feels a lot more like recording than popping in one of my removeable hard drives!

Don't sell! Just accept the fact that you're doomed to keep the stuff forever. There's an upside though. As other lighten the load by getting rid of their reel to reels you can make side money converting their tapes to CD's. I could use that half track right now.
