Tascam MSR-16

Hey Friends,
I'm brand new to the list and looking into
purchasing an MSR-16 analog reel-to-reel
recorder. I was wondering if anyone out there
had any experience with this machine and
would give me an unofficial product review.
I'm very picky about a nice, warm sound for
my Hammond B-3 and other instruments/vocals
recorded in my home studio. Is this the
dream machine for me? Any pitfalls for me to
be aware of? Chronic problems? Hidden expenses? Tips, tricks or techniques? Music
style is Blues / Reggae / Funky Jazz.

I've got one and I love it. I've had it for about four years and it's never let me down. It sounds great. About the only hidden expense is the cost of tape...but that's hardly hidden. I'm barely using it at all anymore because I'm using my computer to record. If you have any further questions, just ask. Feel free to email as well.

Thanks for the quick response...I've seen
a couple of these machines on Ebay trading
for $1,000 to $1,500 or so. Do you know if
these reel-to-reels are still being made and,
if so, what a brand new one might cost?

I can't image that Tascam would still be making these things. As far as I know they aren't. I'm not sure what they went for new. I'm just guessing, but maybe around $3500 or so.

I think the range you found on Ebay is about what they're going for used. I had mine listed for $1500 but didn't find any takers. I could have sold it for less but it was worth more to me than that.

It's a fun machine though!
 
I have one & it's a great ...finally after 15years of use it went out for a new counter roller ...rubber was shot & to align / calibrate heads. Nothin beats the warm sound you get from anaolg.

thats some time answering must be a record 13ish years ??

But just to keep the trusty MSR alive here is my take as well.

I have an MSR 16 and an MSR 24 and both are fantastic
if i want to get my ideas down fast i turn the MSR16 on, press record and play done ..easy.
i hated turning the pc on going through the set up then pi@@ about with settings, then freezing and crashing,,,, and the sound for drums and bass was never right, i hated it, i still hate it :mad: there always seemed to be a problem.
the msr works great for my lack of patience which sums it up well....
its a no nonsense relyable great sounding machine that gets the job done fast.
and in such a small package and footprint.
