Why are you using the M1 and the LA20?

Why not just sum M-30 channels 1~8 to BUSS 1 & 2, connect the BUSS 1 & 2 SEND jacks to the compressor inputs, and connect the compressor outputs to the BUSS 1 & 2 RCV jacks? Done.

Ahhh, the line level from the M30 is -10dB and the compressor wants +4 dB. The LA 20 is convert line levels.

What model compressor? And even so why use the M1?

It was an LA audio TCX 2 dual tube, which I bought but returned as it had issues itself. The reason I used the M1 was a) more headphone outs and b) at the same time, add compression to individual channels, much like I did with the submix out to my reverb unit. However, I accept that you could easily do without it by just sending the desired channels to a buss and using that. Thanks R

My mistake the converter is a Tascam LA 40 mk 2 , Balanced to unbalanced line converter.

The LA Audio TCX2 has both balanced +4dbu and unbalanced -10dBv interconnections. All you’re doing by bumping and balancing the audio is adding noise and distortion, unless the compressor was more than 25’ away from the mixer…the compressor is -10dBv unbalanced internally. Balancing the signal doesn’t make it sound better, it mitigates noise. Generally noise interference/induction isn’t a problem with unbalanced interconnections unless you are using poor quality cables, or your cable runs are more than 25’ or so, or there’s some other unusual environmental factor.

And okay on the other reasons you are using the M1, but, seriously, if all you’re wanting to do with the compressor is manage your master sum, just use the insert points on the mixer…no need to take it off of the M1 and then back to the mixer.

Hope this helps.

You may have been having level issues if the LA-40mkII input level switches were set to -20dBm instead of +4. Look at the bottom of the unit. But, again, in your setup the LA-40mkII is completely unnecessary, and, IMO, detrimental.

Thanks Rob. Yes I did notice that the compressor had a -10dB facility but alas it didn’t work well and the unit had horrible distortion coming from it. I did try it straight into the M30 but it was usable, so I returned it while I had the opportunity ( 30days policy). I have a clone of the RS 124 P Lane, which is now working well. Many thanks for your input, sir. Much appreciated
