Tascam DBX units

Iv got a nakamich unit which is similiar to the DBX and have DBX on 2 portastudio machines. The specs of the portastudio's whith DBX off is not too good, up to 12.5 khz and about 60db signal to noise ratio I think. I get a lot of pumping whith bass and drums on the same track whith DBX on. I think in the computer age sometimes you might not need a DBX or dolby unit, cause you can clean the tape up in the computer.

here is the wiki article on DBX:D

What is the difference between DBX 1 and DBX 11? I assume DBX 1 was on the earlier models and DBX 11 are on the cassette and portastudio's?

dbx Type I and dbx Type II are completely different circuits, mainly related to how the upper end is handled. Type I is for high-speed open reel machines, and Type II is for lower speed open-reel and cassette machines. One isn't necessarily an evolution of the other (i.e. Type II isn't the latest and greatest just because it is monikered by a "II" instead of a "I"). Type II was developed for the particular needs of the cassette-based analog tape recorder.

A little more explaination can be found here.

Thanks:D So type II should be O/K for 7.5ips reel2reel besides cassette. I just scored a type II unit today and Im just looking at it now. Its a model 224 simple encode/decode unit. Just has a few pushbuttons on the front and has record and play level adjustments on the back, but no manual. Anyone know of manual for it?:D

Type II units were widely used for consumer reel decks - I still have my DBX 40x unit, been keeping my eyes peeled for DBX vinyl.
