Recently purchased Tascam 80 reel to reel 8 track deck. All inputs (8) and outputs (8) are through RCA type plugs. It appears to me that most mixers have ins and outs with either xlr or 1/4" plugs, and the only RCA plugs they have are L & R (stereo). What piece of equipment do Ineed in orderto record several tracks at once into this (Tascam) machine?

how about leads with a 1/4" plug on one end and an RCA on the other?

maybe it would be a good idea to post in the tascam forum. that way people subscribing to that forum could jump in.

hope this helps,

I have a Tascam TSR-8, and it's the same setup. It sounds like you don't already have a mixer to go with it? The number of tracks you'll be able to record will be however many outs you have on the mixer you get. My board has direct outs for 8 channels, so I can record all 8 tracks at once. If your mixer doesn't have direct outs, you can only record onto as many tracks as you have output Busses. This may be Main Out L/R only (2 tracks), or Main Out L/R and Aux 1/2 outs(4 tracks), or Main Out L/R and Aux 1/2 outs and Aux 3/4 outs (6 tracks). You get the idea. You can also use the insert jacks on each channel strip to output a signal if needed.

As micmac stated, all you need between the mixer and recorder are cables with 1/4" on one end and RCA on the other.

Enjoy that Tascam!

a mixer or mic pre or direct input will work for your situation. If you have 8 mics with separate outputs, you can record 8 tracks at once.....or if you have more mics and a mixer, you can combine their efforts into 1 (or more) tracks.
