Tascam 488 - how to record tracks 5-8

Hey there,

since a few months I´m a proud owner of a Tascam 488 but I didn´t use it much so far.
But yesterday I started to record a song with some mates and everything went fine untill we wanted to record on track 5. Everytime we tried, we either had track 5 on track 1 then, or track 1 on track 5. Isn´t there a opportunity to record 1 and 5 (resp. 2-6, 3-7, 4-8) separately?

I hope anyone can help

They do record separately unless there's something wrong with the machine. The process to record on track 5 is identical in every way to track 1 except that you press the button for track 5.
Make sure you have the pan knob panned all the way left. Give the heads a real good clean if you haven't already.
Do you have the same issue with track 6 and 2, 7 and 3 and 8 & 4 ? Or is it just 1 and 5 ?
