Recently I bought a Tascam 488 as is (only 25 bucks!) with a broken tape transport and tracks 5 and 6 not working (they wouldn't arm). I took the top cover off to discover some joker spilt a beer or a coke or something inside! Wtf? So I cleaned all that crap out with q-tips and alcohol, cleaned the pinch roller and drive belt, took track buttons 5 and 6 apart and cleaned the contacts, cleaned and demag heads, Sprayed all the pots with electronic contact cleaner and brought her back to life! Works and Sounds great! Heads look pretty damn good too! Yippie!!!!!!

Thanks Guys

Thanks Guys, I'm gonna have fun with it!

Well
All I have to say is ........FANTASTIC !!
I bought a MXR Stereo 10 Band Equalizer on ebay
And it had been soaked in BEER.
It looked like someones girlfriend had a
revenge plan that definitely worked.
I cleaned it up, looks like new.
rebuilt the power supply.
The voltage regulator and filter caps was fried.
Doesn't work.
The next thing I need to do is replace ALL of the Opamps.
HAHAHAHA that SUCKS

Ya, Certainly fun.....The self satisaction you get from taking something that is broken, and putting little or no money into it, using my head, being patient and repairing to a functional state....IS....A great feeling.

Now if only that 1970 VW CONVERTIBLE that is sitting in my back carport (I've been working on for 2 yrs now) was as quick and easy!!! Ha.

Definitely cool to bring something back like that. I snagged an old fostex a-8 from ebay cheap and after cleaning tons of gunk from it, and replacing several vu lamps, got it working nice now. 8 tracks of analog goodness for under $100.00. It's like finding $$$ on the street...hee, hee!

my 488 is in great shape. i wonder if i should dig it out and compare it to my dig stuff i been using for so long, but i might actually like it better!/?
