Hey tape pros,
I just got a Tascam 388 to add another 8 tracks of tape to the Fostex R8/454 that I have. Problem is the stop button on the 388 works about once in every 5 to 6 pushes. Any idea if this is a hard thing to try to fix myself. Do the contact points on these get dirty and stop working? Do I need to tear this thing apart too much to fix it. Would it be better to have an electronics show do it?

Any opinions?

Thanks,
Ryan

Never had a problem with those switches on any tascam units I've had. I"d have to look at the schematic to remember but I'm pretty sure the stop button just grounds the transport logic. If there's a flaky solder joint that'll cause trouble. You could reflow the solder joints and exercise the connectors to the control panel. You could also buy the spare control panel I have for $20 plus s&h. Cheaper to do the former. Don't know how adept/comfortable you are pulling stuff apart but the control panel isn't too bad.

I might do that once I get it checked out depending on the results. Thanks for the offer.

Let me know if you need any pointers on getting to the transport button solder lands for reflowing.
