Hope someone can help... I have a Tascam 38, which I love. But I have a chronic problem with tracks 1 & 3 on playback. First, the problem. Then what I've tried by way of isolation and troubleshooting--to no avail.

I record on 1 and 3, VU signals indicate good reading. Now, sometimes these tracks play back just fine. Then, I take a break (leave deck, gear, mixer on, or sometimes I shut things down), and then they don't play back anymore (though VU signals show proper movement.

I've tried the following:

1. Switching cords around--basically moving all the cables around to see if I can isolate a bad cable. But same problem: sometimes there's playback, then it "disappears" --VU movement but no sounds. It is NOT THE MIXER CHANNELS, for when I put any other tracks through the mixer, channels 1 & 3 I always get playback.

2. I switch sound cards, moving 1 & 3 to different slots. If the specific cards were suspect, then the new channel assignments would show up there (if 1 or 3 card was bad, and moved to, say, 6 and 8, those channels would not work). But, NO! The same problem persists on channels 1 and 3--sometimes playback and then it's just gone!

I don't know what to do or what to look into next. Anybody have any systematic ways to isolate this. I'd love to have all 8 tracks. I just put mucho money into new heads, new motors, and total overhaul--so all else is like brand new. Help!

cracked solder joint or cables

You could wiggle all the cables that go into the backplane. I don't have this problem on my 38 but I did have a cracked solder joint on my 34 where the connector pins were soldered to the backplane.

Poking a cracked one could make it fail or restore it to operation. Then a visual inspection might show a crack in the solder that goes all around the pin or lead. Just reflow it with a little silver solder and a good iron.

There is a picture of a cracked solder joint somewhere in this BBS.

Thanks, Ethan.
I was wondering about the connections in the back of the deck. I'll open it up and exam whatever connections I can see and check solder compromises. I'll let you know how I fare.
best,

Check the plastic connectors from the motherboard so they are not loose.

Hi Vintage. I want to check these plastic connectors, as you suggest. Is there an easy way to find them? I do have a manual for the deck. Are these connectors pictured in the manual? Many thanks in advance.

I had this same problem on a 32 one time. It was intermittant. I had to take the back panel off and fix the solder joints where vintage said to check. It fixed it for me.
