Tascam 38 - Problem

Just bought a Tascam 38 on E-bay. I haven't used one of these since the 80's...When I fast forward it really slows down. If I FF to the last 1/4 of the tape thengo into play/record, the FF the the take up barely moves and will bog down to zero.

Any help on this is appreciated.

If you are using real old tape like ampex 456 it is probably sticky and shedding.
Clean your tape path real good and try some new tape.

A fellow once gave me an Akai reel recorder free of charge as the result of the problems you're experiencing. It turned out that the guy was using old shedding Ampex tape and never cleaned the tape path. He was clueless. The problem was solved after I cleaned the tape path and used new tape as per Gary's post (Herm). The machine was fine.

....I cleaned the tape path but it seems to me like the reel is trying to put on the breaks or the reel can't handle the load. Any experiencees like that? The rewind time is within spec but the fast forward boggs down...

I was hoping it was a blet or something easy. Again, any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED.
