Hi.

I have a Tascam 38, as well as an M-30 and the DBX units. I've been able
to record on tracks 1,2,4,5,7 and 8 with (mostly) no problems. On
Track 3, I recorded a track, then then the track seemed to disappear
on playback. On track 6, we couldn't get anything to record in the
first place (as evidenced by no movement on the VU meters). Any
thoughts?

Thanks!

One thought is to try swapping the channel cards. If track 2 is working perfectly, swap that channel card with the track 3 channel card. See if the problem now exists on track 2 and is fixed on track 3.

Thanks. Would you mind telling how to swipe those channel cards? Also, somebody suggested that I spray Caig labs Gold cleaner or Deoxit d5 on the cards and connector. Thoughts?

The VERY first thing to do is get some 90% (or higher) rubbing alcohol, cotton make up pads, and Q-tips, then give those heads a good cleaning. Clean the entire tape transport path while you are at it. DO NOT use the alcohol on the rubber pinch roller though.

You would be amazed at what a little speck of tape residue can cause as far as record/playback issues. Cleaning would be the first step before tearing into the guts of the machine.

Thanks, but I cleaned the heads and tape transport. Any experience using Caig Labs Gold cleaner or Deoxit D5 on the cards and connectors??

thanks for the help!.. do I just unscrew the cards from the back, or is there more to it than that?

Do you have a manual? This will show you exploded parts views so you can see where things are connected.

The cards are accessed from the bottom panel. Remove the bottom cover and you will see the 8 channel cards. The cards are held in by a metal vertical brace so you have to remove that first. Note that pulling a card out can be very difficult and you must use caution. Putting a card back in can be tricky also since you do not want to force it in and accidentally bend or break the connector pins. Again, use caution and patience.
