Tascam 2488- Copy Tracks to New Song

I have a Tascam 2488 that I used to record a 1hour and 15 minute set at a recent gig. We used the 8 inputs to get the 4 vox, bass, drums, guitar and keys. I basically just hit record when the set started and let it go for the whole 1hr & 15min, so obviously the Song File is quite large.
What I would like to do is "slice & dice" the large song into several smaller songs, keeping all 8 tracks intact for each of the new songs. I'm really new to this and am not sure how to best approach this. Can someone help me?

Thanks in advance!

As far as I can tell, there are two only ways to do this and neither will be convenient.

One way is to copy of the entire file to a new song, then delete everything but the song you want. Then repeat this process for all the songs.

The second way is to make a backup of the file instead of a copy and restore it to a new song, edit as before and repeat for all songs

I'm not sure if either would be faster since the entire 1.5h file has to be written each time regardless of the approach (i.e. you would only have to make the backup once. But it may take just as long as the copy to restore the file)

One possible solution is to get a copy of the free audio editor called Audacity.
Connect a SPDIF cable from the 2488 digital out to your computer sound card digital in and record the song on your computer.
Once in Audacity you can cut the songs and paste them to another Audacity track then export each one to its own wave file.
Using SPDIF you don't have the worry of A/D or D/A converting.

I had thought about suggesting something similar, but the OP seemed to indicate he wanted to keep all 8 tracks separate so he could mix the songs individually. If so, exporting to the computer probably wouldn't be a piratical solution.

You're right, my suggestion would mean a mix on the 2488.

He could export the individual tracks then drop them into Audacity. Then cut and paste.

There's really no quick or easy way.

SOLVED: Easy way to save only part of the record

Hello all!

I have found this question while I was trying to solve this problem on my Tascam DP24. I have several 90 minutes recordings(song file), which contains several authors performances from live exhibition. I ned to split this recording, to be able to burn it on the CD.

This is the simplest way, how to do it(tested on tascam dp24, fw 1.02, but shoul be the same for another models, too.):
Intro: My Tascam stores all the audio data on SD Card as a WAV files.
After connecting Tascam via USB, you can see directory structure as:
AudioDepot\
MUSIC\
MUSIC\SONG_0001\ZZ001_1.wav, ZZ001_2.wav,etc.
MUSIC\SONG_0002\ZZ002_1.wav, ZZ002_2.wav,etc.
...
Utility\

The trick is based on proper timing :).
Eg, I have 90 minutes recording. Now I have to record eg. first 10 minutes into file.

1. You just need to MARK IN and OUT part of the song you want to MIX-DOWN into stereo track
2. RECORD it (this will create master file, which can be only one for one recording)
3. add effects in MASTERING to this master file.
Repeat steps 1-3 until you are happy with the results for one part of your record.

OK, here comes the most important part:
4. connect tascam to your PC viac USB
5. activate USB connection on Tascam
6. browse to tascam mass storage in you PC(sdcard connected via usb)
7. copy file \MUSIC\SONG_XYZABC\Song_XYZABC.wav to you PC as eg. TRACK1.wav (this is the final master file with applied efects from the mastering stage)
8. you can also copy file \MUSIC\SONG_XYZABC\Song_XYZABC_z.wav (look at the _z suffix, this is the original mixed-down stereo track file without applied efects in MASTERING stage)
9. safely remove Tascam mass storage
10. disable USB connection on tascam

Now, you can repeat steps 1-10, select another part of song and continue (your original recording stay untouched). When you are copying the file into your PC, select another destination file name, to prevent overwriting master file from previous part of your recording. When you have finished, you will have several wav files in your PC, which are ready to burn on CD.

Tested on Tascam DP24, fw 1.02.

Best regards,

Peter.
