tascam 246 quirks

this 246 doesn't like fully rewound tapes. i play one from the beginning, the right cassette wheel doesn't move and the tape gathers beneath the pinch roller - this happens with all different tapes
-- however, if i ffwd to about the 100 marker (not seconds) and play, both wheels move fine and there is no problem - has anyone experienced this?

Takeup motion or tension.

The takeup reel action is derived from the same thing as FF/RW function, which is a motor and clutch assembly that has wheels, a pivot and two little tires.

Although the FF/RW and takeup tension are all electrically adjustable, my gut feeling is that you have to look at the rubber parts first. The tires on the clutch assy maybe dry/slipping or may have become sticky & won't turn as well under load.

So, as the FF/RW motor and clutch are at the innermost reaches of the cassette mechism, take for granted that if you go thru a major disassembly you'd want to change the (2) tires and (2) belts in the unit.

Unfortunately, rubber can deteriorate over the 25 year life of these units. It can literally turn to goo, which causes the type of problem you have and others. I can vouch that removal of the cassette mechanism from the 246 and almost total teardown of the mech to replace the tires is a significant teardown, but is not impossible & certainly isn't brain surgery.:eek:;)

so i already had the belts replaced. is there a site online that sells the rubber tires?
i'd like to document the bowels of this thing with more pictures :)
man some of those plastic multi-wire connectors are a pain to remove..

Nice pics!

As I recall, the ones I used were PRB (brand) ST .56, which in layman's terms is outer diameter of .56", but they stretch a bit onto the wheel for installation.

On Dr ZEE's website I saw something that gave the idea,... that you might find a common rubber O-ring that might fit, (Home Depot/Lowes).

This is the closest thing I could find that I think would work, without searching all night:

Oh yeah,... searched Google for VCR Repair Parts, Idler Tire or Cassette Idler Tire.

Tascam Parts should be able to find/sell you this part, at a well marked up margin. (323) 727-4840.

".56" OD is just what I found that worked. The tire stretches over the wheel. ".65" was too big. ".51" as seen on that previous web page should be just about right, given again that it stretches snugly onto the mount.:eek:;)

I had the ST.56, but that's by memory & it's been a while. I'd have to dig thru my stuff to find another one, and that's questionable if I have one.:eek:;)
 
Parts

2 different phone reps. pointed me towards the "idler assembly". Does that sound right? They are about 12+ each. Ouch :eek:
