Tascam 246 Pls Help - recording over previous recorded tape

I recently got a Tascam 246, replaced the belt, pinch roller, etc I'm in business.

I downloaded the manual, however, still in need of a little help. How does one record over previous recorded tape? When I attempt to record over (press REC/PLAY) it doesn't seem to let me, it just plays the previously recorded track.

Please help!

are the cassettes in "record protect"?

The Record Function buttons should be pressed. Red-flashing is record ready and go red-solid when Rec/Play is pressed and recording commences.
