New guy here, I just took my recording stuff outa mothballs and it seemed to be working well. I played my two reels some and then left it for a few weeks. Today, I cleaned the heads with alcohol, played an old tape (that was breaking down, squeaking like mad, and depositing gunk on the heads, tensioners) to try and recover a recording of my wife's beautiful singing a few years back(before the chronic cough) and the equipment seems to have developed a constant hiss in Channel One. All others are quiet, although I know I need to clean all the pots and sliders (that begs another question an the best way/stuff to do that).

How can I proceed to track down this hiss?

Glad you guys are here!

It was the 3440. I say "was" because when I cleaned the crap off the heads, it quit. Was the oxide jumping the track portions of the heads? Could be. It was from an old TASCAM tape that was bad from the friend I bought the stuff from. He bought me another new reel and it does fine. I'll look into restoring the tape, thanks!
