the proto-j's and ysm1i (passives) are both a little over 200$. i will be using some regular sharp receiver for them, and see how they sound first, and then look into buying a power amp if needed. any suggestions on with one to go with? any help is appreciated, thanks

i'd get the yorks with out a doubt.. i've heard them vs the j's and there's a large difference.. if you want the yorks for a cheaper price get the Art monitors, they're the same

yeah but how shittay or non-shitay is that amp that comes with it?

is it a yorkville designed amp?

The amp seems fine to me. But there's nothing on it to indicate who actually manufactured it. I have pondered that question myself. Just says ART. The amp only adds another $80 or so to the price of the monitors, so it's a good economical solution.

I'd definently go with the Yorkvilles IMHO. I just got a pair of YSM-1 off ebay a week ago for $96 for the pair and 35 shipping. They sound excellent for my needs. The highs are clear and crisp. A little more low end would be helpful but just add a sub. sometime in the future and itll be fine. But yes I just look around on Ebay and stuff and see what you can find.

Are the ART's just rebranded Yorkvilles or do they use different components?

EXACTLY the same. Just a different nameplate. Go to their respective sites and compare pictures and specs.

My simple monitoring unit consists of Event 20/20's(pas.) and the
Proto J's.
The Proto J's, peak wattage @ 100, provides me with more than sufficient referencing vs the 20/20's. Though specs given by Tannoy states that freq'y response is flat thru-out the audio-spectrum, there is a noticeable 2-3db boost in the lower freq's even when eq is flat.
However, the Proto J's translates efficiently well allowing the user to correctly cut/boost freqy when appropriate during tracking while also giving the user the necessary stereo monitoring during
mixdowns.
Priced just right, annnnnnnnnd, listening to others musical creations who incorporated the Proto J's in judging their own productions;...and determining it's perf equalled or surpassed
other passive monitors in it's category/price range via A/B/C/D comparisons @ Sam Ash and Manny's, I decided to purchase the J's (after I rapped most hard, Sammy's newbie salesman to lower the price from 199 to 159) which turned out to be an able back-up/ref to my 20/20's.
Though I have not been able to compare or even give an audience to the Yorkies, I have mostly read hi-praise for thier monitors. I have listened to members who use YSM's in thier recordings via the MP3 Forum and can honestly tell that the Yorkies also gave the user more than capable translation as these members songs were sonically tite!!!
I am def'ly short on rec'ding & mixing skillz/knowledge but I am
loooooong on ears!!!

I also found out that Yorkville now owns ART. You can get the ART's from Bayview Pro Audio for $238 shipped.

Thanks for the help. I'm on my way to new monitor city.

I really like my YSM1's.

But the key to any monitor system is learning how to translate them.
