Has anyone had a Sytek make weird sounds, like static or ..... whale mating calls? I plugged a RE-15 I just got into it, and I thought the mic was bad because I was getting all this staticy stuff, then I found out it wasn't the mic. I think i read that someone had to separate their Sytek from their other rack stuff due to noise.....

Anyone share this phenom?

Mine sounds more like a porpois mating call. :D

Can't helpy ou there, guy. Why don't you give Mikey a call and see if he has any ideas/suggestions? I'm sure he'll fix it for you pro bono if it's acting up.

The "whale mating call" sounds like a bypass cap is bad. When a cap goes bad, there is an oscillation that gets through (the very frequencies that the cap is supposed to "dump" to ground). A cap is slowly shorting. A good tech can find the bad cap, if this is what is wrong. This problem is VERY common in older equipment. and is the reason for "re-capping" If the unit is newer, than it is a bad cap from the factory (not common, but not impossible)

Good Luck.

i see i see. I was counting on Chessrock to admit to his equiptment's animalistic tendencies.

Yes, I will call Mike....I was just running this by you good people as well.
The first time I noticed it was when I turned off the phantom power (several minutes after) and it started making the noises. It didn't bother me, cuz it was off. But then, like I said, a few nights ago I plugged a RE-15 into it and it acted like it had a "grounding" problem. Especially in my hands. When I put it on a mic stand, it went mostly away, but still too noisy to record with. It's not the mic---I plugged it into my GR and there was silence.

this is all.

With this new information, I recommend you take that unit offline immediatly. It sounds like the balanced input has a bad cap allowing the +48v phantom power (DC) into the amplifier. If this is the trouble, if that cap fails, you will harm your pre-amp and possibly more components in your soundchain.

Get it checked out.

One more question, did you try a different mic cable? A bad cable would cause this problem.

Gonna try that tonight, but since it didn't do it when i plugged into a different pre, i assumed it was the Sytek. I called Mike and he's gonna take it back for repair/replace.

Thanks for the info

really weird. After playing with various mics, I also determined that one of my km184s puts out a siren type sound when the phantom is released from the Sytek. It starts really piercingly high (like a whale in heat)..then slowly decreases pitch until it sounds like Excitebike sounds. My other km184, as well as other mics don't do this. Although it acts just perfect when the phantom is on. Strange. The "static" sounds are also gone. Everything seems to be ok, except for what I mentioned. Which is good, because I planned on tracking some drums through the Sytek this weekend. I was pretty pissed for a bit.....hopefully the static won't come back...if so, Mike will make it right.
