Syncing Issues

Hey, I've got all my recording equipment set up, and the computer is a 1.8gHz Pentium 4, with 512MB of RAM, and runs Windows XP, using an RME PST/96 soundcard. In both Cubase and Audition, I find that when recording tracks, the synchronization if off. I've done everything I can think of to cut down the load on the resources, and I have very little running aside from firewall and selected recording program. Anybody know if this machine just needs an upgrade, or what's up? I'll upgrade if I have to (or rearrange parts from my 3 computers), but don't want to if it's not a parts issue. Thanks for any help in advance.
 
What do you mean by synchronization? Are the tracks you're recording not synching with pre-recorded tracks during overdubs?
 
Well, I record a first track using a click/metronome, then on the second one, I just focus on overdubbing stuff perfectly on synch, but when I play back the two tracks together, the tracks are off.
 
just zoom in, figure out how many ms difference and delete. Even some nicer soundcards have a very small latency issue
 
Well, it seems that that would get annoying doing that to every track. I mean, you have to do this for ever single take, just to hear if it's actually on time or not. If it's not actually on time when the instrument is played, then it happens over and over again. If there's something I can do to stop this problem, I'll do it. I'm not here to be as cheap as possible. ;c]
 
Yep, I'd investigate your recording software/soundcard to see if there is a low latency mode for recording.
 
I changed the buffer on the card from 2048 to 256. I was still having problems. Just a few seconds ago, I went into Cubases settings and switched the VST multi-track driver. It was set to the generic ASIO Multimedia Driver, which reportedly had an Input Latency of 110.000ms and an Output Latency of 749.932ms. I replaced this driver with the ASIO DIGI96 Series one, and it shows itself as having an Input Latency of 5.805 and Output Latency of 5.805ms. Hopefully this setting will help. It was under Devices>Device Setup>VST Multitrack. Hopefully it works.
