Sync Box Recomentations....

Like my other thread I wasn't to sure where to put it...I was gonna put it computer recording, but there's alittle more to it than that....Ok, quick undown of main setup

Fostex G-16-s analog multitrack
Cubase SX (PC)
ST-Audio C-Port (soundcard)
Soundtracs Solitaire console w/VCA autimation

Now...I want to do sync all these lads up for variouse reasons like....Cubase with Analog mutitrack for multiple recording/playback purposes....Analog to Soundtracs desk to sync the autimation with tape ect ect....

I know I'll need a sync box of some type, but know little about them and want to know your sugestions....Also, but not that important, it would be nice if it was a rackmount, only 'cause I'm an untidy bastard....

Could you post what kind of connections all of your equipment has ??

There's lot of clocks that do all 4 (wordclock, aes/ebu, s/pdif coax and optical) ..

As a matter of fact, I have 2 C-ports and a 3rd one in the mail, clocked by a Mutec Smart Clock (8x WC out, 1x AES/EBU, 1x coax & 1x optical) which I found cheap (-50%) on eBay.

I'm guessing the tape has 9-pin as well as the soundtracs ?

Hi Poet....Ok...The Soundtracs has 2 set's of midi in/out/throughs which I used with the C-Port to sync the audimation up to Cubase via the C-Port....The Tape (Fostex G-16-s) Has an extra RCA in and out on track 16 to stripe the tape....Downside (who posts on this forum) Filled me in that I'd have to look at somthing with and that converts MTC (for the Soundtracs) and SYMTE (for the G-16)...

BTW, how are you liking the C-Ports?....I wanna get another one...Ok, they're not ballanced, but I think they're the best value out there....Have you had any problems with multiples???

There's some midi interfaces (Motu, Midiman,..) out there that have a SMTPE output, one those could/should do the trick imo.
Only backdraw is you lose a channel on the Fostex of course..
(the motu one goes for about $500 i guess)


Really liking the C-ports here. Installing a second took me 5 minutes: open the box, check every PCI slot on IRQ availability, insert the two cards, hook up to digital clock and boot up.

Only thing is the unbalanced line outputs (inputs no big deal, my soundcraft has unbalanced direct outs).

Ok, might be my stupidity, but I couldn't find any info about these two...Is there any links I can goto?
 
Ok....Had a look...I'm stilll very confused, but so me it looks like these two units are great but SEEM to offer alot more than I need and they are fairly pricey in Australian $ too......I found this link would this do the trick?....I THINK they're alot cheeper too...I've worked out exactly the setups I need...

Computer to mixer autimation (DONE) MTC to MTC
Analog multitrack to computer (NOT DONE) SIMPTE to MTC
Analog mutitrack to mixer autimation (NOT DONE) SIMPTE to MTC

1 outta 3 done....Do the others look right....AH, I'll get it one day..., but yeah, that's all I need the synro to do...

I know, I know...It's SMPTE...Man, I'm not havin' a good night :)
 
Just thought about sumthing: Cubase has the ability to make SMPTE tracks ... this way you lose an output (and a fostex track) but it should work without having to buy anything.

So: console -> midi -> cubase as slave to console and sending a SMPTE track -> audio cable -> Fostex 16track...

this should get you a 15+8 input and 15+7 output setup ...

Nope, not at all sorry :) .....Are you talking about the Cubase/Multitrack setup?.....The desk only reads and provides MTC I think...which is where I think I need a converter to link it's Autimation to the Multitrack (desk as slave)...
 
All you need is a SMPTE to MTC convertor. MidiMan and JL Cooper made several that worked great. I have an old Syncman that worked fine. You should be able to get used ones for less than $100.

The only real trick here is getting SMPTE on to the analog tape then sending that to the convertor box. Once it is converted to MTC then you just chain all the digital gear with a midi cable.

Most convertors will also read/write SMPTE.
