I just wasted my band's night. We were going to record on my Fostex DMT-8 8 Track. I put the drummer in tracks 7 & 8 (L,R) my Bass on track 6, and my guitar player on track three. When I set record levels, track 3 guitar was bleeding into track 7, and Bass was bleeding into track 8.
I did not know how to precent this, and we scrapped the session.
My question: Can we record 3 instruments at once without any bleeding of another instrument into another track?
I understand 1, 3, 5, and 7 get panned hard left, and 2, 4, 6, 8 get panned hard right for recording.

So what's going on, and where did I go wrong?
Any help would be appreciated!

Dougie,

I don't know the details of your machine, but on my tascam I just leave the pans up the middle when tracking live. Also does it have a track-bus switch to make sure your sending each channel signal to its corresponding tape track and not the stereo bus. Look in your manual for some information of this sort since the bleed is predictable in terms of left and right. I hope I'm not insulting your intelligence, just trying to help.

Hmm, Can't edit post

I meant to say a Direct-Bus switch. On my tascam I record multiple inputs in Direct mode with the pans set to center.

Thanks for your input.
You can't insult my intelligence. If I had any, I wouldn't have screwed up everybody's night with this problem.
Saw nothing in my manual, but will try it pans in the center.

I used to use the DMT-8 back in college, but I can't remember if it is capable of recording more than 4 tracks at a time. You might want to check that.

Also, I seem to remember that each channel input had a switch where you could route the input to a track or to the stereo buss. Make sure you have this switched correctly and the channels are panned correctly to correlate with the track you want to record on.

I also seem to remember that the manual had some tutorials in it; those are always good for figuring out how to do what you need to do.

Good luck!

The DMT-8 is only a 4-buss recorder. Think of each track as "listening" to a specific buss. Tracks 1 & 5 listen to buss 1; 2 & 6 = buss 2; 3 & 7 = buss 3; 4 & 8 = buss 4. If you record on tracks 3 and 7 at the same time, they will both record the same input signal on buss 3. You have to plan out which tracks to use carefully, but you can record 4 input sources at once.

Thanks for your knowledge.
Found the manual finally. Says I can only record 4 track live if I hook up my DAT with it as well.
Even doing that, I will only get 2 track analog, and 2 tracks digital.
Now I'll go get that new Tascam MX-2424...
