You mentioned that it was the mic bodies for that price... do they come with a capsule or will they be seperate, and how much ARE the capsules going to be?
When will there be a picture up?
6 or 3 micron? Tell us more about the insides... you KNOW how I am about info :)
Peace!

Tube,

They come with your choice of Cardioid or Omni capsules. You can order an additional set of capsules for a retail of $100.00, and we will look at bringing out other pattern capsules in 2003.

I know you and Chessrock want more information, but to be very honest, I do not know where Brent has set the roll off. I have been busy on the SP-828, and the upcoming VTB-2, so I am a little bit removed, but e-mail brent at brent@pmiaudio.com and he will be happy to answer yours and Chessrock's questions.

I think a very useful bass rolloff for an accoustic guitar mic would actually start out around 400 hz and gradually rolloff more and more as it makes it's way to 80, where everything completely drops.

I know this sounds pretty extreme, and I'll likely never see a mic with this feature in my lifetime. But this curve, to me, is generally what is called for when close-micing most accoustic guitars. And telling someone in a home studio with home-studio accoustics to back the mics off isn't always the best option. :D

I suppose this probably belongs in your designing the future forum. Thanks for the tip. I'll email Brent.

Chess,

Here are the early plots. Click below to see them on the C4

Wow! that roll off starts at 550HZ. That's pretty aggressive. Should be interesting.

The link doesn't work for me. 550hz? ! ! Are you serious?

If what you say is true, then this is a very momentous day for me. I will buy a pair of these mics and officially relinquish my spam police duties.

I may even consider becoming one of those freako Studio Projects followers, now. :D Going all over the internet touting the virtues of the C4 before it's even released. :D But only if I'm given a SP T-shirt or something first.

lol. Just messin' with ya. That is an extremely cool feature, and I will buy a pair as soon as they are released. I've had many fantasies of owning a pair of SDC's with bass rolloff starting off at 400 hz. 550 is a bit aggressive, but I'm not complaining. Plus they're designed by Brent Casey. Damn, it, I want mine, now. :D Sign me up.

Alan, Is my suggestion of a ribbon capsule going to be reality?

It is not a link, it is a PDF file and you can also find the same thing on the upcoming product page on our web site. Oh, and yes, we are serious!! We have been from the beginning....:D

Howdy, do any of you mic designers double at night as a monitor designer? Seems like a mirror image?:D

Wow, wouldnt THAT fill a niche... some truly excellent 8 inch nearfields that arent fatiguing and translate great for less than $500 a pair. Ouch. That would rock.

I'm wondering how these would actually compare to say.. NT3's, NT5's, and the 603's.....

Alan,
Would these be the obvious choice for recording an acoustic guitar?,as I've just started looking into stereo recording acoustics.

Yes, acoustic guitars are always good on SD mics, but you can get great results with LD's as well. One of my favorite combos is to use a small diaphragm up close and a large diaphragm back 2 to 3 feet. It gives me depth and a fuller tone.

When exactly should we be expecting the C4's to hit the market Alan?
I'm interested in seeing if I'd rather get these than the 603s's...

I have an original VS-880 with the VFX-1 card that I bought in 1998. The machine has yet to ever glitch on me. The funny thing is that when I first bought it and it was relatively new on the market, I didn't think it was half as amazing as I do now. The thing travels with me wherever I go.

Rock on Brent, I still use mine too! Great for live stuff.

Do you use MAS or MT1? Has RDAC compression ever been a sound-quality concern for you? What about the converters?

Geek,
I agree - very useful for live stuff.
Actually, my machine was on MT2 for I don't know how long before I read up and switched it to MT1. I don't remember choosing MT2 at any point, but I probably did very early on. I really didn't notice much of a difference between MT1 and MT2, but I never got all "Barbara Walters" over the whole compression thing. I've gotten some great results and some hideous results no matter where the "Record Mode" has been set. So far I haven't tried "LIV, or MAS".
As for RDAC and the converter concerns: My VS-880 sounds far better than a lot of Beatles and Sinatra recordings I've heard. Only one problem there...
