So the B5 diaphragm is a little over 1/3 the thickness of a piece of paper and 1/2 the thickness of a human hair, while the C3 is a little under 1/7 the thickness of a piece of paper and 1/4 the thickness of a human hair.
So DJ, stand in front of a mirror and hold up each diaphragm edge-on in front of your face. If you can see your ears, it's a C4. If it blocks your whole head, it's a B5. :D

Thank you Crazydoc,

Just some quick questions:

<1) DJL doesn't like Alan Hyatt or Studio Projects or PMI or anything to do with them, for reasons that no one has ever been able to ascertain.>

If I don't like somebody, is it OK to bring it here?

<3) The SP C4 and the Behringer B5 look a lot alike and are made by the same company, and some folks have jumped to the conclusion that they are the same mic, without any more proof than that.>

I was under impression the difference in the capsules thickeness makes them entire different animals. Different grill construction suggests that they sound different too. Also, C4 comes in matched pairs... Also, don't forget the SP customer service...

4) DJ doesn't think anyone should buy cheap mics - they should buy expensive ones that will become vintage mics and "hold their value." This of course doesn't keep him from vociferously expressing his opinions about cheap mics, even though he's never used them.

Computers don't keep their value even one day--we buy them to use them. The value of the microphone is different--it is not in the microphone, but in music it makes.

<4) DJ thinks that Alan's dropping his prices on the C series is unfair to those who bought them at the higher price, and that Alan should keep the prices high.>

It is the market, and it is Alan's business. I think he and only he can and should decide on marketing. However, the fact that he let people know about price raise speaks for him very nicely--it is an honest business.

<Hope this helps bring you up to speed, Marik. Please pay better attention in the future.>

Yeah, I know :) . Just have no time--you know--projects, microphones--it is interesting...
Digest like this would be very helpfull to be up to date. :D :D :D

I believe that those specs were obtained from both companies literature, and I have no reason to believe they're wrong or misleading.

If you really want to verify it for yourself, any good precision micrometer should do the job. For reference, the average human hair is about 12 microns thick, and a standard sheet of bond paper is about 22 microns thick.

So the B5 diaphragm is a little over 1/3 the thickness of a piece of paper and 1/2 the thickness of a human hair, while the C3 is a little under 1/7 the thickness of a piece of paper and 1/4 the thickness of a human hair.

The thickness refers to the thickness of the Mylar material used; the gold sputtering is actually onlya few Angstroms thick, and contributes very little to the overall thickness measurement.
Thank you very much Harvey... also where did you see the literature with the specs for the Behringer B5 where you got those FACTS from... do you have link? Thanks again.

Gee DJ, has it ever occured to you to browse the companies websites for the information rather than just sit at your computer expecting everyone else to spoon feed you.

What makes you think that I haven't done that already, and know that the specs for the Behringer B5 doesn't say anything about a 6 micron diaphragm? So, before I except Harvey's FACTS... I want to know where he got them from.

I've never been able to find the micron specs or diameter for the C4. Anybody tell me where?

Harvey, I've been emailing your. Want to buy (3) more sets of head phones. Email me back, please.

The 3 micron spec comes directly from Brent Casey, I believe. The 6 micron Behringer spec comes from either their manual or a NAMM show handout I picked up.

Neither the Behinger B5 spec sheet or manual say anything about a 6 micron diaphragm. Please post the Behringer B5 NAMM show handout. Thanks

No. That would be a waste of my time and energy. If you don't believe me, go find out the information for yourself.

Ask for Uli.

Can we give this a rest, please? Seriously, you seem to be the only person here who thinks these 2 mics are exactly the same. I think it's been pretty well established that they are not. Many have said before: If you are soooo curuious, buy the mics and see for yourself. If you're not that curious, let it be, and go find something else to tilt at windmills about.

Yes, the 3 micron spec came from Brent Casey in a current thread about the C4 mics. I read it over there too.

(Responding while keeping Alan's theme in mind) Yeah, the Behringer B5 comes with both capsules and just like with the SP C4 you know your getting a 797 Audio built mic... and you don't have to spend any extra money for it. :)

DJL, before you dare to recommend a B5 instead over a C4, you should at least have listened to both mics.

All you know for sure is that both mics are made by 797Audio and come with two capsules. Everything else is mere speculation. Even if you someone posted pictures of the PCBs, and even if (IF!) they were identical, it still wouldn't mean the two mics sound identical. The capsule is the biggest factor. There simply is no way of telling the two mics are equivalent without having used them side by side on critical material. So, I suggest you do exactly that, or shut up. It's as simple as that.

I can live with that... but there goes your "post the facts" crap down the drain.

So anything I state must be accompanied by absolute proof of my assertions at all times? I guess you're right. Maybe I shouldn't even bother posting my "opinions" disguised as "facts" here (as some people have done).

In fact, I think I'll leave all future mic questions and statements of fact to you, since you seem to have all the answers to everything. I'll avoid posting anything that has to do with opinions OR facts. Doesn't leave very much for me to do around here, does it?

With you DJL, it seems that no response is better than any response. So from now on, that's what you'll get from me - no response - about anything.

Anytime I say something, it seems like my reputation, my experience, or my knowledge is being challenged by you. I have news for you; I don't need, or like, that shit. I have better things to do with my time than prove myself to some faceless entity on the Internet.

Please don't leave, however, just do as I have done, Ignore him.

If he ever learns to contribute anything but endless challenges, questions and complete quoted posts followed by inane comments then maybe I'll give him another chance.

There was a thread at Studio Forums called "Have pity on Dot", and in the opening post the person on the thread commented that they felt sorry for me because I had posted some info on the B5 and C4 here at Homerec, and that because of that I had opened myself up to an endless barrage of questions.

I made two replies in that thread and I didn't call anyone anything, or even refer to anyone. I am the only person who can delete topics at Studio Forums. I took the topic down because it was disintegrating into name calling and very possibly counterproductive to our forums - which have a very high signal-to-noise ratio.

That's pretty much it. : )

Where can I find some info on that site about the C4 at? Looking at getting a pair of them to check out.
When is the price drop gonna happen?

Dan, it better would have been deleted after the first post. It really disappointed me how people can gossip.

I was even more disappointing to me when Alan contributed to it as well, although he made an interesting statement. But a manufacturer of really great microphones, a person who has so very much to offer in a positive way, took part of a gossip thread, sigh.

It's about time we stop the name calling and personal attacks that seem to be common on some forums. A disagreement if fine with me, no problem.

I think we better take care and give respect to people who have a lot to offer (Harvey for example).

I really like this board very much.
