I bought a brand new Studio Projects C1 a few days ago, hooked it up to my Delta 1010 through an AudioBuddy PreAmp. Yesterday I noticed random crackling noise and traced it to the output from AudioBuddy. I'm very new to Condenser Mics..does this happen to you guys?
I did a bit of research in this forum and found these two threads:

Does humidity/condensation cause this? Hopfully I'll get back home and today and it'll be gone!
The Mic cable I use is also pretty long..runs about 10feet. Can that cause the noise?
Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.
Jay.

Does it come from the audio buddy only with the C1 in it? What happens when you turn up the gain on the ab with nothing else plugged in?

Its silent without the C1. It starts when I plug it in.

Have you tried other mics? It just sound like you got a broken one or something... I don't think a bunch of people on this board would rave so much about a mic that crackles...

Chris just a guess but it might also be a problem with the phantom power going to the mic. You might want to try it with another mic and also swap out the mic cable.

I ran across an older mic cable of mine that wouldn't work with phantom power for some reason. So you might want to look there as well.

Guys..
I got back home yesterday, powered up the AudioBuddy, hooked the C1 and wholla!..it was gone! No more crackles!
Dunno what caused the crackle..might have been just a bad day.
Thanks for your inputs anyway.
C1 rocks!

Sometimes oxidation can build up on cables and cause a good deal of grief. If strange things happen like that, try cleaning off the XLR pins with a very small wire brush. I keep a set of brushes around all the time. I get them at hobby shops. I have some small ones that I can clean out the inside of the female connectors. I can hear it now...yeah I can just see where some of you sick F#$@s minds are going with this one

Anyway it saves a lot of trouble shooting and is a main cause of static and noise, but it really is very simple to keep your cables clean. I guess no one really ever thinks about cleaning the cables and connectors, but it works. Sometimes if you just plug and unplg the cable 8 times you end up scraping off the oxidation, so my guess is that was what was happening to JKZ

Glad it stopped and is working for you now. :D

Id still look into getting a better pre. I still havent heard if Alans new pre has hit the streets yet?
