Are you saying that you have 2 B1 mics, and there is a clear sound difference between the two of them?

Looney,

Well, yes - that is what I'm saying. Clear difference? Maybe.

The second B1 that I tested has a very slight deficiency in the low-mid to low range when compared to the first one. However, they both have the same "character".

Also, I noticed a small scratch on the second B1. With all of the testing these mics reportedly go through, I can understand how this might happen. It looks like someone with a wedding ring may have held it a little too tightly. Is it a coincidence that the one with a scratch is slightly less robust? I don't know.

Keep in mind that our testing was not very scientific, and that the difference is small - especially for a mic that is this affordable.

Trew,

Thanks for the clarification. Even though you say the difference is small, they may not be condusive to using in pairs if this is the norm. It's possible you did get a damaged one, and maybe the scratch is not a coicidence to the slight difference in sound (could have been dropped or something, I suppose). We probably shouldn't speculate though. I just have some high hopes for this mic, and am probably expecting too much for the price. Maybe Alan will chime in soon and address this (I think he's in Germany at the moment though).

Anyway, I don't want to set off any red flags...

So, tell us about the character of the mic...Are you able to compare it's sound to anything else? I know your opinion will be subjective (as will everyone's), but a little insight into it's sound would be appreciated. :)

Thanks.

Tacos and B1s

Hey Gidge and Dolemite!

Just ask my wife if she knows!

Our blankets tend to float during nights when I eat frijoles or "shepherd-style tacos" (BTW yous hould try those one day) :D

Back in the original thread, I hope the mexican distributor of Studio Projects can get some B1's soon!

Trew: Do you think they could be usable as drum overheads?

I should hope she doesn't. Unless salad-tossing was part of your marriage vows...then its kosher.

Mmmm, I'm already salivating at the mental image of shit-drenched bed covers!

Hey guys, I am in Germany and don't have much time, but Trew I want you to check this out. On each B Series box on the front side up near the top there is a small colored sticker. It is either Red, Black or Green. This 3 micron capsule is different than our 6 micron so we shoot every capsule with a B&K, then code them. So if you need a matched pair, the color dots need to be the same color. Obviously our reps did not tell the dealers this yet, so when I get back I guess I will have to do some dancing.

If the colors do not match, I will do an exchage with you on the scratched one to match the other B1 color code, so don't worry. This is not the dealers fault he did not know about the matching thing. I can't explain the scratch but on the next shipment will put the B1 and B3's inside a plastic bag and then put it in the zippered pouch. That should do the trick.

Anyway, I gotta go. I will try and check back later, so be sure to check the color dots for me.

Alan,

You must have seen this question coming, but what sound characteristics do the 3 color codes correspond to?

Maybe "the good, the bad, and the ugly"!

Alan, when you have time could you connect the dots regarding
any sonic differences between the three colors?

Thanks
Chris

Well, it was a pre-marriage settlement to deal this kind of issues. By this I mean she knew about my "problem"

;)

Can't help with the B-1 but I am loving my TB-1.They might share build quality, the TB-1 seems very well put together, very solid.I have no idea what sonic simularities the B-series might share(if any).Tommorow I'm going to lend the mic to a friend who has a C-3 and he is going to A-B the two mics on his girlfriends voice.I'm looking forward to hearing the results.

I have a B1 and I like it a lot. I've been recording my guitar amp with it for the past week and have not really done serious vocals with it, although when I first got it I did play around with some vocals just to hear it.

For guitar amps, it's incredible, really. I use a Kalamazoo Model 1 to record with, which has about 6 watts of output through a 10" alnico speaker. The improvement over the dynamic mics I was using is dramatic: more presence and definately more fidelity. With a flat EQ it sounds great, but then obviously with a little mixing the guitar sounds huge. I really don't know how else to describe it, and I can't really make a comparison as this is the first time I've stuck a condenser in front of my amp. I really didn't get it for the amp, but I plan to use it more that way now.

For what little vocals I've done, it sounded nice. Not harsh, but a lot of body, and, again, presence. I'm looking forward to doing more vocal work with it. It did seem to have something funky going on in the mid-range, but to be honest it may have been my settings at the time. Perhaps I'll post more on the vocals when I start doing some.

Construction-wise it is well built. I don't care for the stand-adaptor at all. It seems this is one place where they saved money. It's kind of lame, actually. There's no way to increase the tension on the hinge, so you're stuck with either a straight-up position, or a 45 degree angle.

Overall, it's a well-spent $80 IMHO.

SP B1

toorglick,
I had the same problem with the mic clip. But if you take the little black covers off of the joint, you will find the bolt for tightening the joint and it will work fine.

alan,
The dots are the same color. But I am satisfied with the similarity between the two mics for the price. Unless you'd like to personally match a pair for me! (a fellow New-Yorker) :)

Also, the two SCM900 mics that I have sound completely different from eachother. We modded the good one, a particularly good sounding one. So, if anyone is considering trying Scott Dorsey's mic mod, I would suggest that you start off with a good sounding unit. As Harvey mentioned, the quality of the Nady mics can be all over the map.

Lastly, I had a chance to record some vocals with a B1. Male tenor singing rock/pop. Again, this is just my opinion...it did a great job. Not too shiny, and enough beef to sit in the mix. A great addition to my "collection". Or for just starting out...a B1 and SM57 for about $160...wow.

Too much to ask?

Attention Studio Projects "B" line mic owners:

How bout' posting some samples made with the SP "B" series?--solo'd instruments/vox and complete mix, techniques used...etc.

I'd like a reference(s) as to how these puppies sound, if that's not too much to ask...when you have the time of course. I'm sure others would like to hear samples as well :)

Alan: what's the deal with the colored dot-coding--so that potential buyers may be better informed and can ask the retailers specifically for the desired 'grade'?

i thought somebody was making some samples sometime here? lol
