How bad is Studio Projects Quality Control

When 797 Audio in China shipped Studio Projects mics directly to UK dealers without PMI testing the mics first... IMO, that's a sign of bad quality control on PMI's part, or what I'd call "no Studio Projects quality control".

Quality Control

Hey, DJL.

My experience in the automotive industry is that you try to work the control up the supply chain. Our best suppliers' parts were never inspected by us after we and they had statistically shown that we could expect zero defects. Thus, it is conceivable that the microphones could be sent directly to other markets. There are many ways to assure quality outside of checking each part.

Hi apl,

Read the first post in this thread.

I did. I've not waded through the whole thread. My response was to yours.

There are two sides to quality. One is building something exactly the same every time. The second has to do with robustness.

We would do our best to determine the root cause of every warranty failure of our component. About 50% were "no defect found". To mitigate those, we would work on educating the service people. Another big chunk had to do with something outside our control, like improper installation, being dropped, or a failure subsequent to something else going wrong.

I would expect SP is aware of its warranty costs and I hope they are diligently improving both aspects of the quality of their product. It seems they try to keep the customer happy, anyway.

WTF has that got to do with the first post in this thread and do you know for a fact that the mics don't undergo QC checks once they arrive in the UK.

ausrock... the info was posted on this bbs... you have lots of free time, so search for it yourself. :p

Free time my arse!!! It's 3.00 am and I've just shut down the studio after spending the night tracking.

Quote from the first page of this thread......................." R. Hargrove sent the mic out of Knoxville, TN."

They didn't try to keep me happy.

That would be because you are an obessive dink who acts like a child here. With over 4000 posts in a year and half you obviously don't get much time in the studio and/or are for some reason dismissed from social responsibitlities. Either way, your obsession with SP and Alan Hyatt is vomit-inducing. No wonder "the good ones" have moved on to different boards with your ilk haunting this board. I don't blame SP one bit for closing your file long ago.

Hate to burst a bubble, but the mic was returned because of an incorrect mailing address; thus would explain why it took so long.

Lovely. Oh well, I'm sure we'll *need* to know the outcome once it's actually been sent to PMI and not their next door neighbours (I bet that old lady's sick of getting all these broken microphones in the post!) ;)

Yeah, she's goin' "This ain't that egg beater I mail-ordered!"

And, meanwhile, next door Alan and Brent are thoughtfully studying half a dozen egg-beaters :D

"Hmmmm...can't seem to find the fault...have 797 been ignoring our design specs again?"

Yes, that would explain it... and if you remailed the mic from Knoxville, TN it should only take a few days to get to Brent Casey... who, I guess is now inchange of PMI/Studio Projects customer service?

Well, you’d also have to factor in how long it took the little old lady to figure out it wasn’t an egg beater and return it to the sender. I live in Knoxville too and you know, these little old ladies around here, once they get an egg beater that looks like a B1, they hates to give it back!

:D :D :D I don't care how good Brent is, he's not going to be retrieving a condenser that's been used to whisk up a pancake mix!:D :p

The first thing I check when we get an eggbeater in is how well it works in the mix. The resulting pancakes should be relatively flat. I usually do a test pancake with it panned in the center. If it's too hot, I back it off a bit.
