Studio Projects B1 vs. MXL 990

The 990 is good for high pressure sources i.e loud guitars, screaming vocals. I use it when someone who doesn't know what they are doing is loud and too proud.

It's my, cool looking mic, don't have to worry about someone destroying it, back up.
 
Chess, I know you're joking--touche--and I've always enjoyed reading your thoughts at this forum, but I have to add something here for the little guy, like me, who has a long list of "things to buy" and moves slowly but surely: research is not only helpful but enjoyable. I've been recording direct and haven't needed mics until recently, so I sat back and enjoyed the search. In the end, I would have spent much more, if necessary, but my searching saved me some money and got me decent products when I needed to buy.

But yeah, I do need to get a life. My wife tells me the same thing when she sees me reading these posts each week. If only I didn't enjoy this stuff so much...

Read my post carefully. I didn't say that AT stuff was made in China. Under my post, AT stuff would qualify as "other" manufacturer. So, DJL's post re: AT stuff would be something like X Japan manufacturer/AT 40xx. I haven't used the 4040. But have used the 4033 and 4050 extensively. The verdict is somewhat mixed for me there. The 4050 is an ok vocal mic for a wide variety of singers. But, I've never found the 4033 particularly useful on most vocals (far too nasaly). On guitar, el. guitar cabs, however, I would agree that it is a fabulous mic.

You've intimated the same thing concerning other SP mics in the past. You got me on the B1 thing. But my post concerned more than the B1, as I am sure that you are aware.:rolleyes: There's no 797 Audio stamp on the C1. Though, you have never been shy to beat this over our heads in the past.

"abandoned wives/girlfriends of obsessed recording musicians support group?" Maybe then, if we can get our loves busy talking and writing and comiserating, we'd finally have the precious time we need to play in our studios.

PMI Audio have hardly made a big secret of the fact their Studio Projects range is made by 797 Audio of Beijing, PROC. It's stamped loud and proud on all the bloody mics for Pete's sake :rolleyes:

The main thrust of DJL's beef (oo er missus) is that he seems to believes that no one in California had any input into either capsule or circuit designs and that these mics are, despite protests to the contrary, just as Off the shelf as those sold by Behringer, Nady, MXL, etc. Of course Alan Hyatt has said more or less the same thing about ADK's products; so he hardly stands as a paragon of virtue in this sorry affair. I'm not sure if he's ever claimed DJL is an Off the shelf product from a Chinese mic factory though.

That and the dots, of course. But, please, let's not go there :rolleyes:

Mark7... I think 797 Audio deserves more credit... and if you want me to talk about the Studio Projects colored marketing dots again I'd be more than happy to do so. :D

What the heck is it with all this 797 Audio stuff? That's the first thing that hits you when you do any research on the B1 - Go to the site and look! Duh. Lessee... Here we have Alan saying at every opportunity that the B1 is made by 797 in China to his company's specs and it's pretty nice. Here we have DJL saying "AHA!" Must be they're made in China! Lookit: 797Audio! And lookit all those dots! That proves it!"

WTF?

I mean, it's like arguing the morality of having Tuesdays, fer chrissakes. Give it a rest.

Since it's a SP v/s Marshall for mainly vox, I wouldn't purchase either of them. I would add a few more bucks and get a V67g if it's gonna be used for Vox.

If your using them for Vox and possibly other applications, then the B1 would be a good choice. But for stricky vox,, V67g

Excellent, my thread is the place to be :). I know little about mics outside of my little realm (57s, Oktavas etc) so these are all VERY helpful. I'm leaning towards the C1 as it is colored. The only downside is that it goes for around $150...I realize it is hard to make a microphone for under $100.
 
i don't see what the big deal is about SP mics being done by 797 audio...........like its some big secret conspiricy or something.

alan has been up front that his mics are made there and he has mentioned 797 audio numerous times. He has said that he wanted their name on his mics. You know that has to cause them to take a little more pride in that paticular mic.

more so than the mics they do for companies that try hide the fact that its a 797 mic. (they may pee in the capsule of those mics..... i would)

Well, I'd take the V67 or C1 over a 990 or B1 as a main vocal type mic... the 797ASP B1 is the most versatile of the bunch, but IMO it would NOT be a great main vocal mic.

It's no secret... hell, the 797 Audio/Studio Projects B1 even says "797 Audio Studio Projects B1" right on the mic... so what's the big deal?
