Scary, isn't it. At 13 I had a bike, a soccerball, violin and a french horn. Oh, and some goldfish.

Same here only scratch the violen and french horn, I had a clarinet. I would also like to say at this point that I am terrified of posting my studio here. Compared to some of these kids set-ups I'm still working with training wheels. Seems sort of Freudian to me.

Well, know that some of us are gear-hogs :)

More gear does not necessarily make for a better studio. More gear DOES require a LARGER studio :) I'm sure a lot of people would agree, with the right talent and the right engineering, a really good demo could be created on a $200 portastudio. I've seen it done.

Frederic -

I took a look at your gear list, and noticed that you use Aiwa monitors, with some midification. I'm using Aiwa speakers as monitors, and found out that after learning them for a long time, I can get a pretty good approximation of how my mixes will sound anywhere else. (They still sound like crap, though... ;) )
Can you please explain about your modifications?

(Use a personal message or E-mail if you want...)

Oren

Hey Oren,

Sorry this took me soooooo long to get back to you. Been hell with work and remodeling my kitchen (which was a suprise item on my weekly "honeydo" list. Anyway, yes, I do use Aiwa home theater speakers, with some modifications. The units I have are AVSX1000's, which have dual 5.25" aiwa woofers and a 1" tweeter. I lay them on the sides, tweeter's out, but in reality they could be standing up if you prefer.

Now, for the modifications.

I yanked out the two woofers and replaced them with a pair of Audax AP170ZO 6.5" HD-A cone woofers and the tweeter was replaceed with a TM025F1, both available from audix. The woofers obviously did not fit into the holes, so I used my router to make room :)

Because the volume of the aiwa cabinets was not quite ideal as compared to the design I sorta tried to emulate
(http://www.audax.com/doit/us_ht06.shtml) I had to make minor port changes as well as tune the crossover. THe crossover was a cheapo 2-way crossover that had the crossover point too high (5K) for some strange reason. Its been modified to bring the crossover point much lower so that the woofers are in their operating range and more efficient.

Because even with 6+" woofers, the bass is lame, I have a subwoofer in series with the two monitors that provides additional bass. I have this wired up with a bypass dp8t toggle switch that allows me to put the stereo sub in and out of the circuit so I can monitor both ways. I find listenening with and without the sub to be an excellent way of not adding too much bass, or not having enough. I guess "idea" would be the sub produces 1/2 the volume?

Anyway, I hope that helps. I'm also going to send this to your email directly :)

Let's see,

I got maybe 6-8 dollars worth of recording shit that I use almost every day, and a basement that cost me about 89,000.00. I could have gotten the basement a lot cheaper but my wife made me put a floor over it so she would have somewhere to sleep. Me, I just sleep in the basement so's nobody'll steel all the recording shit.

You had GOLDFISH!!!
You must have been rich!!
I'm afraid to add up all my stuff.:(
But it's somewhere in the same realm of yours Frederick.
By far my biggest investment is the Grand Piano, Somewhere in the neighborhood of $36,000.

Geez, all you guys sure are deprived- as far as I can see, none of you own a pair of cans! Why, with my 30db of attenuation, I can shut out the hiss of your vintage ribbon mics!...Oh well, guess I'll join in:

Roland VS1824CD $2000
Korg PXR4 $400 (alright, it's a toy, but it's my toy)
DBX-386 $500
POD Pro $500
TC electronics M300 $250
Furman PM-8 power conditioner $140
Rolls RA62 HA headphone amp (ha! *I* have cans!)$150

2 matched Oktava MC012's/ cardioid and omni capsules $500
AKG C2000B $100 (new, but a deal)
2 AKG D690 $160 (we don't need no stinkin' SM58's)
1X12 Marshall cab $180 used
Behringer MXB-1002 (used with the Korg for phantom power)$120
KK Audio racks $200
Sabrasom Pop filters and shock mounts $180

Many B.L.U.E and Monster cables (thrown in by dealer whom I have been supporting in a grand style)

Total- about $12,000

And by the way, Frederic, the only reason I own any of this is because of my accountant wife, who has been saving my money in secret accounts for years to make this possible! God I love that woman-Richie

It's interesting how this thread turns out to be this 10k setup instead of 2k. It's even more interesting that I can't find most of the people who posted here on this site with mp3 samples. No offence against anyone here, but I really want to hear what everyone does with their $x,000 setup and see how the qualities actually differ from each other. Cuz we are seeking for the sound after all, right??

AL

By the way, Michael Jones:

I have heard your piano, it's worth the money :)

AL

Yes we are.... But we MUSt be addicted to something.. !!! :D :D

jumpingflash:

not quite sure if you were replying to my post or?? what are you addicted to again?

I'm w/Al. I'd LOVE to see some pics of all these setups, too! W/all this cash invested, you must have a digital camera, too, right?! :D

I'd say I have about $2000 worth of stuff (not counting my PC).
I love the sound of gritty, homemade recordings -- I can hear glossy, produced tracks on the radio whenever I want. The real challenge, I think, is to do something pretty cool w/ very little.

I am in my early 30's and I am just getting started w/recording, though I've been in garage bands and written songs since I was 18. It's a hobby; some folks play golf. Plus, I was raised Catholic, and that guilt thing is tough to get over!!!

Anyhow, show us some PICS!!! ...and give us links to those $20,000 songs!!!

MJ:

Listened to your tune, enjoyed your 36K grand piano alone with your playing. Do you record as a profession or hobby? You really should sell your stuff if you haven't.

ChuckU:
Nice and well balanced mix, and of course the guitar solo, too. I am not familiar with Cakewalk's drum machine, but Fruity Loops has a "swing" controller, which makes the beats more human. So, it might help you to get your drum to sound less MIDI, and of course, better samples will always help also.

By the way, I am no expert, just enjoying the tunes and leaving some feeeback here. And sorry for making this thread more off the topic...

AL

Al, thanks for listening. That's funny. Those drums (though midi - very astute) were actually triggered by a drummer playing a Drum Kat controller.
Since then, I've bought some new gear (Delta 1010, several mics) and live drum recording has been my main focus. Ain't nothing like the real thing.

Chuck,

The driving bass and guitars are cool. The song is a bit redundant after awhile. I know all songs repeat themselves...I guess I mean that it could use a more strikingly different bridge or instrumental part at times. Something to break it up.

I'm not an expert on mixing at all, but it sounds very clean and crisp and balanced. Nice vocals!
