12? jeezus!! what are those things used for? lemme buy some...or get some for free! HA!

When i was buying the last TMD-4000 mixer (used, from a local retailer) I saw a large "pile" of 3-packs for 70 bucks, if my memory serves me correctly (might have $75USD) I figured, "why not". Nothing wrong with having a bunch of identical rugged microphones that if one got "slung" I wouldn't cry. And they are really tough microphones, I have to say. They tolerate heavy drumming well without distortion, though I will freely admit they aren't Rode/ATK/Shure as far as fidelity. But they aren't terrible. Not at all. They sound significantly better than the $89.95 radio shack (made by shure) microphone a particular sax player often insists I use. ::shudder::

at $25 a pop, if I lose, smash, squash, scrap, sling or otherwise deface one, I couldn't care less.

<sarcasm>Also, on the rare occasion a high-energy punk band wants to thrash in the garage, I offer these up. Gives me a comfort level.</sarcasm>

I also have a large rubbermaid container full of unsorted, crackly mikes I never get around to opening up and fixing. See, we save everything. Just in case we move, and want to double our moving costs :)

I'm 13 a couple days from 14. Its hard to get stuff. MY entire setup was about 4000-5000 lasttime i added it up. You have to get your gear used. I just got a $300+ mixer off of ebay for $50

Frederic I see you have a TC-Helicon Voice Prism .... I am interested in that unit. What can you tell me about it and how you use it and how well it works. I play and record all the Guitar, Bass and Keybaords on alot of my own original music in my home studio. I am working on my vocals capabilities but I wouldn't call myself a great singer and I am trying to look at technolgy that can help give me some backup harmonies that are HUMAN sounding as well as help with the overall quality of the lead vocal track. Would you recommend the voice prism as tool.

Also any experience wuth the Antares Vocal producer as compared the the voiceprism.
Thanks in advance for your advise.

Oh my god, where are you kids getting your money? I am way too young to be saying this, but....."back in my day" we built mic stands out ouf coat racks, and we liked it. We had lousy mics and and lousier cords that sparked if we touched them,. You had to stop after every song to retune (drums included, the snare lugs were stripped) because we had shitty equipment. Then we had to walk to practice...uphill...both ways....in the snow.

I need a drink.:(

I saw the title of this thread and thought "Hey, my setup is around 1000$...", then I actually started calculating how much everything cost me. It's more then twice that amount, without even putting in consideration the computer (no way to figure out how much it cost. Built in part by part), furniture, cables and the accoustic piano. I guess it's more then 5000$ all together.

Here is what I actually use...

Canadian Pricing

Digi 001 $1300
Computer $1200
AT 4033 $450
SM57 $139
POD $550
Mexi Strat $329
USA Fender Jazz Bass $900
DR770 Drum Mach. $750
Waves Gold Plug ins $1350

About $7000 Can.. ($4000 US)..

And I do the core of my music on that tiny bit of gear...

Ok I am with Trace, where the heck are you guys getting that kinda money? My parents haven't baught me anything since i was 13 because when i turned 14 I got my first job and they decided I could support myself! :p

My setup:
Gateway 1.3 gighrtz Celeron, 128 megs of ram - $650 (gotta love gateway)

Behringer 602 - $70
Behringer Ultravoice - $130
MXL V63M - $70
noname mic (came with PA, see below)
Samick guitar - $150
Laney HC60 amp - $300
Fender Bassman amp - $300
Eagle bass guitar - $125
Soundtech 100 watt pa system - $300
Mic stants and other such crap - $100

So almost $2000 on my whole setup, and that's like years and years of saving and buying :p So I don't know how these younger guys do it, I mean I am only 19 but still I've been saving up for most of that stuff since i was 14 :) Anyway, if you can afford the stuff, than way to be.

While I'm in my 30's now... back in high school I had two jobs. Worked in a bar as a bartender (tips!!!) as well as working in a music store, which gives a discount to employees. I bought customer trade-ins where possible and made my own cables using coax at 8 cents a foot (in the 80;s) and ratshack metal phone plugs.

Not ideal, but at the time it was necessary. I also had a 1966 GTO I was sinking money in at the time. And a girlfriend, though she was more tolerant of the music than the car.

I'm 20..I just did a rough estimate of my stuff...and it comes out to just below 9 grand...(what i paid for the stuff)

drumset yamaha+zildjian..on friends discount at Mars. (1000)
American Strat - bought from a friend (600)
Taylor K14CE - accomidation my friend at mars got, 10% below wholesale..sweet deal on my baby. Sells for generally 1,000 more than this (2200)
s80 sythesizer and susatain pedal - i love it..but, have *never* used it. Always meant to learn piano..hehe(1700)
American P-bass (700)
line six flextone II xl - again, mars discount (700)
peavy bass amp (400)
q10 soundcard(750)
rode nt3 (160)
sm57 (80)
sm58 (100)
ecm8000s (80)
at pro 25 kick mic (50)
marshall mxlv67g w/shockmount(130)
mic cables (60)
mic stands (40)
pop filter (25)

so, thats like 8900.

not counting computer...which..isn't too much, maybe 1,000

Next month I am buying Mackie HR824's, which will put me over the 10 grand mark.

Starting mid may is some serious basement construction/treatment for a good recording enviroment for all that crap. But, that whole project is going to stay at a little under a grand..a lot of the work is already there...just needs some love and care to turn it into a studio.

Over the summer I figure I will probably spend 1,000 more on mics/cables....

For christmas I'd like to get a Jazz Bass.

So, I'm planning on being at around 15,000 by the end of this year.

Going to Europe for 6 months, start of 2003...so, I don't think I will spend much in 2003...just try to use what I have for a while.

Not sure where I got my money. Hehe. I took a year off of school after HS...lived with my parents and worked full time...so, I was able to save/spend a lot then. Guess the trend just continued...I am a student.

In a couple years I'm gonna redo the heart of the recording end...get a few flavors of preamps...and a more flexible sound card. Maybe thats the 2003 thing. Who knows what will be out then. hehe.

I love birthdays i just got another $150 bucks to spend on music stuff. It takes tons of saving and searching for the best buys for me, i get like almost everything used.

Here's the last 6 years or so....
Home made PC with Sonar $1,500.00
VS-880 HD recorder w/Zip drives $2,500.00
Delta 1010 $400.00
Roland MBD-1 Drum module $200.00
Patch Bay $30.00
Midiman 10ch mixer $200.00
2 ECM-8000's $70.00
MXL V67 w/shockmount $129.00
Shure Beta-52 w/stand $180.00
Ibanez Bass $200.00
Mexican Strat $400.00
J-Station $150.00
Mic stands $80.00
Digitech RP-5 Effects Pedal $300
Total: $6,339.00 - I am stunned! (The first time I've done this - hey it's about $1000 a year)

I got a box full of xlr and 1/4" cables for free. A Mackie 1202VLZ mixer, a Sennheiser 421, an SM-57, a Fender VibroChamp amp, a Peavey TNT100 Bass amp, a Rhodes Electric Piano, given to me from various friends.
I am babysitting a complete 5-piece drum kit (brand new) and a second Mackie1202.
I finished the first half of my attic to use as a studio 5 years ago to the tune of about $5000. The second half (with bathroom) will run about the same.

I use pretty much all this stuff now as I'm recording live drums. Nanocompressor is back in the box.

Young kids, listen up (I'm 40). Unless you marry the most reasonable woman in the world, you're not going to get away with spending good money on "toys" when you settle down. Trust me on this. I see what the ball & chain has done to my friends (several make more $ than I do too - but it doesn't matter).
Also, this Rap, Hip-Hop and scratching shit is not music. You're better than that. Be creative.

I've read what has happened to other people on this forum with there wife's. Second of all I hate that rap hip-hop shit.

I'm lucky in that regard. We allocated a specific monthly budget, which I often carry forward to use several months together to acquire gear, structure, etc. My wife-to-be is extremely supportive of my musical interests. Assuming I stay within budget. I go 20 cents over, well, I'm handed my head :)

Frederic -

I took a look at your gear list, and noticed that you use Aiwa monitors, with some midification. I'm using Aiwa speakers as monitors, and found out that after learning them for a long time, I can get a pretty good approximation of how my mixes will sound anywhere else. (They still sound like crap, though... ;) )
Can you please explain about your modifications?

(Use a personal message or E-mail if you want...)

A fun list for us to do, would be for everyone to add up there equipment assests, and then figure out how much is actually essential...

If anyones like me.. Half the stuff in your studio could get stolen and you won't even notice it, except that there wouldn't be anything to collec tthe dust :D

Or you are like me:

For recording, I don't own anything that I don't use. I'm too much of a tightwad.:)

Now, I have stuff in there that I don't use, that isn't Recording gear, but that's a different story. (Know anybody that wants to buy a pair of Communty Sound CSX60-S2 Subs for $1,000 ?)

I used to have a huge sound system, and at one point I decided that I no longer wanted to do live sound...sure it was fun at times, but it sucks when you bring out a rig that people in other cities are pulling $350 a night for, and the local Yokels whine about paying you $125 a night.
So, I said fuck it, kept what gear could be used in the studio, sold most of the rest of it (except for a few pieces of equipment that I'm not willing to take a major loss on yet - such as these subs) and went and put my digital recorders on VISA.
I thought "Fuck it (yes i think this alot :) ), I'm a grown man-As long as I can make the Monthly payments-what's the big deal?"
Not exactly the smartest move in the world, but I have a setup that works well for me. I like recording on Tape, I'm not really into recording on a Computer...We tried that in the mid 90's, and to me it was a nightmare.
So, why do I like Tape? Well, I like using a Mixingboard to mix with, and effects and noise gates and compressors and all the other things that PC's seek to simulate via software plug-ins.
Hell, I was intending to buy a 2" Tape machine ( I found one in Nova Scotia. It was an MCI machine, with a 16 track block, a 24 track block, the alignment tools, and a customized 48 channel inline (96 inputs at mixdown) Wheatstone mixer, and the wiring harness.
The guy wanted $8,500 for the package.
I had two problems though :

1. I had to move it. I'm in Florida, and he was in Nova Scotia.

2. I couldn't justify the expense of 2" Tape for home recording.

SO, I went with the Tascam recorders....$16 for an hour's worth of 16-track digital recording is cheap!
Also, no hiss, which I thoroughly love.

Almost missed this one for some reason. Definately not keeping up.

the monitors I'm using are/were aiwa AV-SX1000's (or SX-AV1000, I forget), which came with a generic tweeter and two 5.25" woofers. As stereo speakers, they were more than acceptable. As monitors, well, they were "okay" but not amazing. They certainly do not parallel genelic or tannoy or anything of that league.

Basically, I yanked the woofers out, added some fiberglass packing, rerouted the openings, and shoved in 5.75" scanspeak drivers and a viva tweeter, I believe. I'm away on business this week so i can't verify the model numbers, but I copied a design on the web and simply used the "almost the same size" cabinets of the aiwa's. I tuned by adding/subtracting material inside the cabinet until the response was much flatter. They still roll off fairly high, around 120hz or so, though with cabinet changes I can get some thump out of them if I wanted to. Since I have a sub, I didn't feel the need to stress the 5.75" woofers any more than I had too.

you're welcome to email me at midiguy732@hotmail.com. put something interesting in the subject line so when I'm doing my every few days massive mail purge I don't miss it, if you don't mind. I get close to 800-900 messages a day and trust me, i don't read most of them :)
