Looking to get my son a supply of strings for his guitars, that may be just a step above what he uses.

He has an SG Standard and Schecter with Floyd Rose. I believe he has Super Slinkies on them now. He is not gigging, but plays hard each day. What are your reccomendations for durable strings for these guitars?

Additionally, he has a D-35, and a Takamine acoustic. I think he has Elixirs on them. I am looking for good sounding and durable acoustic string-feedback too.

Thanks in advance folks.

If those are the brands and types he prefers stick with them. String choice is a very personal thing and both those you quote are perfectly OK. My choice may not be the same as his no matter how long I have been playing or how good/bad I may be or how much I may/may not know about strings..

Look for three or ten packs of strings online and you'll save a few bucks. They even sell bulk, but that may be a bit much.

I own several instruments and once a year I buy for all of them online to get free shipping,no taxes and if they have a discount I get that too. With all that going on I'm paying less for strings than I did thirty years ago.

Thanks for the feedback. I agreed with you Muttley that strings are a personal thing. Like Acid recommended, I hit the GC while I was out this morning for a Super Slinky 10 pack +2 set. He can restring, once a month, until 2014 now.

Yeah, strings are very personal. You might try a set of Slinky Cobalts, sort of a cross between Slinky's and Elixirs. Just a pack to give him a chance to try something different out. As far as acoustics go, I doubt if you'll find anything more durable than Elixirs. Really, unless you know he's been wanting to try something else, I'd go with something other than strings. Actually, pretty much anything musical is a matter of personal preference.

See thats my point, I hate Elixers. Not because they are bad strings, I just hate the way they sound. D'Adarrios for me all the time. It does depend what I'm putting them on though and also the type of sound I'm shooting for. Strings make an enormous difference to the tone.

I wasn't real impressed with Elixers when I tried them out. I loved Cleartones, but too damn expensive. The new Martin acoustic strings with Cleartone coating are pretty good.

Now that's what I'm looking for.... Good discussion.

Although my son wears it out, I have played and love the tone of that D35. We inherited the Martin from a bluegrass player who believed in Martin Heavies as a required staple. I am not tough enough for those puppies :-)
