Strange happenings - question

Alright, here’s the deal. I use CWPA9. I have been creating a couple of new songs. The first step is that I was setting up a click track. This was comprised of a kick & rim shot every other beat using the GoldDrums soundfont (thanks to your guys I figured out how to do this :D). One song was 4/4 time and the other was 2/4 time and it happened on both.

I went to the piano roll view and inserted the appropriate beats using snap to grid at the quarter note. I did this for one measure and then copied that measure say like 60 – 100 times. I started playing to the click track and it felt like it was dragging. I thought it was a live drummer for a minute…oh wait, they usually push it :p :D. Anyway, I opened the piano roll up to take a look and there was an obvious slipping of the beat (getting behind the tempo) gradually over the measures. I’ve never had this happen before, but then again, I never copied one measure so far out before or used soundfonts before. It seems like some kind of sync issue, but I only have one sound card being used (SB Live Value :rolleyes: - soon to be corrected). Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? It’s kind of a pain to do a click track and insert individual beats on the piano roll for 100 measures :D.

After you have pressed Ctrl + V (Edit -> Paste), then Click the Advanced button and check "Align To Measures". If that doesen't work, adjust the Interval to suit your mood. :)
 
I've had this happen. Not sure what exactly causes it.

What I do now is to enter the beats in PRV for about 3 measures. Then in Track View I set the snap-to grid to full measure and slice the track at exactly 2 measures and delete everything after the 2nd measure. Then I copy and paste. Make sure to check the checkbox to Align to Measures as moskus indicated.

This may be way overkill, but I got tired of this problem happening all the time, and this works for me, so.............
 
Quantize should fix it.

When I do this sort of thing, I Select by time, for example 1:01:000 to 4:01:000. I type these in manually as 1:01 to 4:01

Also, be aware that by pasting multiple examples your clips may be Linked. So if you you modify one particular note, all of the clips will be changed accordingly - unless you Unlink the clips.

I often find that the position marker has to be aligned exactly on a beat to paste correctly. You can click with the mouse to do this - but be careful that you don't accidentally insert a note :)

Better yet, manually type in the starting point for the paste, for example: 5:01

That's absolutelly right. But if BluesMeister like to do it manually, I would let Cakewalk do the "dirty work" :cool:

How would you do that Jaymz ?

If you insert quarter notes manualy in PRV for one measure, and select the clip in Track view, Cakey will select the clip from 1:01:000 thru 2:01:000... and there's where almost this problem begins.

...and why would you call that a problem, Jaymz ?

Because actually, the length of a measure should only be selected from 1:01:000 thru 1:04:119. (We're talking 120BPM for example). If you put a quarter note manually, there's an offset +1 added in the end of each note. It's a looong story to tell, for instance, let it be known, it happens :). That's why if you select the whole measure (4 quarter length) it will be highlighted as shown above.

...But that's only one tick, what's the deal, Jaymz ?
If you copy the clip and paste multiply time... lets say, 100 measure, then you will add 100 ticks for the whole track. And THAT IS a problem.

Then how to fix it with quantize ?

Edit--> Quantize. Use an offset -1 tick in Quantize dialog, and apply ONLY to note duration. Like this...

Pretty good, James. When I said I'm not sure exactly what causes this, I think you may have hit the nail on the head.

I think you should become the Cakewalk moderator! (But only if you promise to stop talking to yourself. :) )
 
And when should I do the quantize, Jaymz ?
Before you copy and paste. Say you made one measure, then make the quantize that way to the clip. After that, make sure you reselect the clip in the track view. It should be shown like image below. Copy the clip, go measure 2, paste as many as you like...
No problem.

It may sound strange, but I applied some logic and got to that very same thought last night on how it may have happened. I just didn't think of the quantize bit, then it got late and I was tired and said to myself, "Nah...surely they would have thought of that" :D

Good stuff man... I just did it and it worked like a charm.

My method involves four clicks of the mouse button. Your method Excellency seems to involve a lot of talking to yourself :D

Sometimes it seems like James has multiple personalities (one being of course, that big black producer from the Bronx :D )
