Pre-roll issue

I am doing punch-in for the first time. I recorded a test track of 7 bars. I punched-in the 6th bar successfully. However, I have set up the metronome as shown. I had expected the pre-roll to start at bar 4. However, when I hit "record" the pre-roll went right back to the beginning of the track and counted in 4 bars before even showing at bar 1. The 4-bar count-in seems to be the sum of the count-in measure (count-in before recording) and the pre-roll before recording count. How do I set it up so that the pre-roll actually starts at, say, 2 bars before the actual punch-in.

Follow-up: I tried the metronome settings shown below also i.e. I de-selected the pre-recording choice and used the pre-roll choice. In this case, when I pressed Record, it went right back to the beginning of the track and did a 2-bar pre-record delay. I am very confused. Brian

I have figured it out: The pre-roll counts back from the position of the cursor (vertical green line). This was not mentioned by anyone of the videos I looked at. Also, need to untick "Count in before recording".

I was going to say, that you should probably remove that "start count-in at start of measure" and make sure you're placing your play cursor right at the beginning of where you're trying to record.

I suppose it should have been obvious !!! However, by perseverance I finally figured it out. Sometime the instruction videos omit these simple little things, which, for a first time user, can really halt progress. Brian

The play cursor screws with me all the time. It can be a very handy item most of the time, but . . .

It's more work but I prefer to cut out the section I don't want and record the new bit on a separate track(s). Then paste the best new part into the original track.

I do something similar when constructing a drum track. I slice the item I want to replace but I leave it in place with it's volume at zero. Then I add a replacement section on the next track and slide it around until it fits. When I get it all where I like it, I combine all the tracks and glue them into one.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I am learning all the time (with much help for you !) Despite my many learning problems, I still think that Reaper is superb value for $60. One day I might even produce my masterpiece !! Brian
