btw: steve stevens should have played with duran duran... or with wet wet wet, but then he would have had to call himself steve stephen stevens or something like that.

Are you talking about something he does on Rebel Yell? I think you need to be more specific about "laser-gun thing".

And it's only about 15 years old ya smart ass. Probably older than you. j/k

not sure if this is what you are talking about, but at some point he holds down the whammy bar, hits a natural harmonic, and then brings the bar up repeatedly as it sustains.....

For what it's worth, I know exactly what you're talking about. Unfortunately, I'm not too sure how he did it.

The Raygun thing was done with a {delay}Lexicon PCM 41..Probobly fooling with the feedback knob / the regeneration knob...experiment with a delay and see what you can come up with.....

Don

TexRoadKill: quite loud for a newbie. 'rebel yell' older than me? yes, sure... that's why I love 80's rock so much - because I don't have a relation to it being born in 1993. :p

gidge: I thought about that harmonic thing - richie sambora does it at the beginning of his solo on "let it rock" (great solo by the way) but it sounds very different from the "laser gun thing". you would have to shake that whammy-bar too fast.
it doesn't sound like some single laser-beams (do real laser-beams sound at all??? ;) ) but more like a "machine"-laser-gun... like switch your joystick - which is connected to your C64 :D - to 'autofire' and leave your finger on the button... oh I forgot... I don't know what a C64 is... :D

lopp: so you're not "too sure"... maybe just a bit??

i also thought about a very fast delay at the same volume and with a long feedback. then you'd play a very short harmonic... but that's not it, definitely not.

wow, DON, I was just writing when you posted. so it's really a delay? hmmmmm... I'll have a look, thanks.

Which song does he do the lasers thing on?

I'm not loud for a newbie, I'm quiet for an asshole. Wait till you really get to know me muwahahaha.

"quiet for an asshole" - ha! good one ;) .

I thought I heard it on Rebel Yell, but I listened to it again today and I only heard the raygun... although the second time it sounded a bit more 'laser'. maybe I mustn't listen to it beeing concentrated :p .

nananana, dennis...

steve stevens is quite famous for doing such effects with his guitar... I think you can hear the laser-gun on the top gun theme, too. but I haven't heard it for a damn long time.

Yeah. The laser thing is definitely guitar. That's one of Stevens' trademarks.

Also, ditto the delay thing. I'm not too familiar with the Lexicon PCM 41, but that sounds about right. Havinga delay where you can tweak each knob helps. Tweak away and get some cool stuff.

I used to have a great rack mount that I used to get the Metal Shop/Steller/Yngwie chainsaw sound. Man I miss that.

I am pretty sure it is a toy gun and he aims it at the pickups. They pick up the signal. I saw him play it live on VH1 storytellers.

I heard White Wedding the other day and if it is the sound in the intro it is very simple. It is similar to what the Edge does in New Years Day.

Some distortion, flanger, delay
Pick a string and while picking it very fast slide your finger down the neck without quite touching the frets. Almost like playing a harmonic.

Similar to the old surf guitar riff.

Is this what you are talking about?

Nah, this is a laser gun sound. Exactly like that of a toy laser gun.

FZmontanaDF: toy laser gun? yeah... this could be it. damn! where's another outlet? I already have that drill on stage for the 'poundcake' thing... heheh... no way :D . and the toy gun uses battaries anyway.

speaking of aiming things on your pickups: I once recorded a guitar-part and always thought "where the heck does that ticking come from? it's not even with the beat..."
I then had to find out that it was a watch in my pocket, picked up by the guitar and boosted by the amp .:)

If you play by your tv or stereo, use the remote to change channels. You can hear the beeping coming out of the amp.
