...BTW, I am surprised that people are so busy to figure out whether it is a dummy mic, or a "real one", that nobody even paid attention to grill construction?
You mean the fact that you can see right through it? Looks very un-obstructive.

I don't blame Alan for not hooking it up. Would you want everyone that walked by spitting on the diaphragm if it was your mic?

Actually, when you think about it, why should he? He's already sold more on pre-orders that he can probably produce for a year or two to come.

Besides, it can't be realistically evaluated in that environment anyway.

if hes not trying to sell it, why bring it anyway?

and it was "that environment" that brought on the famous C1 "exactly like a U87" comments.......

You ever show pictures of your kids, or feel proud of them when they do good at the school play (or band or sports, etc)?

Right. So why go through all that shit again? It's not like this mic needs the exposure.

One of the nicest surprises at the show. Here's a pic.

Humm, that's an interesting looking mic, thanks for the picture. :)

Now keep in mind that I haven't any actual experience with this mic at all . . . whatsoever . . .

But I'm tellin' ya, it's the greatest mic ever. Everyone should go get one NOW! :D It's awesome !

Did he happen to say when he was going to have more? :)

Thanks all of you for coming out to AES it was a great show better than we had expected. I'll try and address questions about the mic as best I can as soon as I finish playing catch up.

Well, we made it back at 4:00am, so we are all pretty tired.

The mic is working, but a few of the features did not get hooked up in time, but they all work. The front is so open that we did not want to demo it there, exactly for the reason that everyone would be yelling and spitting into it. So, the sound will be judged by the pros, and others soon enough.

What I can tell you is that we are ever closer. This mic has all new technology in the manner the patterns switch, and how the pads work...and no we will not reveal our IP on how it is done. If we do, people will steal it, but it is all Stephen's work. The custom FETS and Jensen transformer make it an amazing detailed microphone that I have never heard the likes of. Klaus Heyne, Dirk Brauner, Neumann, and all the others were by many times to ask questions.

Looks like March of 2005 for the first 50 units. We will be contacting those on the list soon to get things ready. Sorry we can't say more, but more will come soon.

how long is the line to get one...

and what type of down payment is required?

Assuming your list was compiled on a "first come, first serve" basis, can you say when the break off date for the first 50 units falls?

OK, so you won't reveal HOW, but will you at least reveal WHY? I thought pattern switching and padding were pretty standard features - as long as you do them 'well enough,' you've done them 'well enough,' if you get my drift.

Add to that, it seems a pretty strange marketing strategy to be saying something like, "we've done these things better, but we won't tell you what's different about them or what was wrong with them in the first place." Are we just supposed to trust? I can't imagine that padding and pattern-switching are areas for noticeable sound quality improvement, anyway.

In any case, unless you're using in-house IC's for something, it's not going to be very difficult for someone to rip a mic apart and figure out the answers. And even if you ARE using in-house IC's, there's surely enough clues in the surrounding circuit and/or build design/capsule to figure out what's going on... I don't see how you can protect a trade secret like that by just keeping quiet.

I have to admit you've only piqued my curiousity (as well as my obvious confusion at the lack of apparent logic in your policies), and I'll probably be ripping one apart myself one day.

Hmm, ok thanks... I guess if you're not willing to discuss the new technology and how it works and etc there really isn't anything more to say about a mic that isn't even on the market yet... and if you post the “more will come” on the PMI Audio Group website instead of HomeRecording.com it won't appear as pre-sale Spam either. ;) Thanks

I guess spam is in the eye of the beholder. I found nothing in Alan's post that smelled "spammy". It's a thread about a product he's offering. He kindly came here to answer what questions he could about a new product his company is offering. Quit reading so much into what people write. We have an actual moderator for this forum now, and it isn't you.

I got a demo of the mic, we definitely have something to look forward to. Just talking with Brent and Tony makes you realize how passionate these guys are about building mics...especially this one.

I liked what I heard coming from that mic too. Smooooooth stuff.
