I'm finally getting started on my XLR panels to connect the control room to live room. Connections from control room to vocal booth will be next weekend. You'll notice the bottom 5 connectors are combo connectors. I can plug in XLR or 1/4" TRS plugs. I'll be using those for the headphones. I just couldn't stand the look of 1/4" jacks in that nice panel. Got the combo jacks from Markertek for about $2.89 each if anyone's interested.

I've got glue setting in the wooden boxes I've built to house the panels. I'll probably spend most of the weekend soldering the connectors to the snake. Let's see, 48 connectors X 3 solder joints each = 148 solder joints. Guess I had better get the reading glasses out :D

Krikie, those are nice. I always get that damn solder smoke in my eyes.

Is that smoke dangerous? No one seems to know.

Isn't the smoke mostly the core...rosin or flux or whatever? I didn't think the lead could be in the smoke.

Did I think wrong?

The smoke contains flux (a nasty chemical) and lead vapor.

Your lungs are not going to like it on a constant basis.

A quick and dirty way of avoiding it is to put a small fan on the desk. I use an old power supply fan which runs on 120V. I soldered a plug to that, and whenever I solder, I simply lay it near the board and it has enough flow to suck all the nasty fumes away.

Oh, and a paper mask won't help you, the fumes go right through.

DD,

Cool panels. Did you buy pre-punched plates or did you do those yourself?

Darryl.....

DD - very nice, I like the combo jacks a lot. I have a bag of them (24 in all) for XLR connections in my studio, when I get to that point.

Where did you get the panels? They're very nice too. Markertek also?

I got them on eBay several months ago. Paid $10 a piece for them brand new. Love that eBay! I looked in my old eBay emails for the seller but couldn't find him. Sorry. Didn't get to start soldering today but hope to start tomorrow.

Gotta go to NE Philadelphia Monday for a couple of days on business so that'll slow me down. Anyone in Philly?

I'm about an hour and half away...

Frederic - I wish you were closer. I'd be glad to pay you a visit. I'm not exactly sure of my schedule but I know I'll be in Philly all day Tuesday and Wednesday then leave early Thursday morning.

Well, assuming you're not working all night, I can drive an hour or so and meet you for af ew drinks or something along those lines.

If you want, have time, etc, give me a buzz on my cell. 917-334-2790. If not, thats cool too.

Thanks for the offer Frederic but I'll have to pass. I'm not real comfortable driving at night in unfamiliar areas so I wouldn't venture very far.

DD - I was going to pick you up, you're about an hour from me without heavy traffic. You wouldn't have to drive at all.
