sound card,mixer,and other things that confuse me

ok i am about to build a small home recording studio.yesterday i went and bought the first of my gear(a yamaha motif7).i now need a computer with a great soundcard.my main question is what soundcard do i need?.here is more gear that i know i will need ,a comptuer of course(probally a sony),i only need 1 mic,and the motif7.the kind of music i will be recording will only be hip hop,rap,and r&b(that is why i am only going to need 1 mic).i need a sound card that has profesional sound.does yamaha make a soundcard like this?.i was told by the salesman at the music store where i bought the motif7 that a soundblaster card is not good enough for a studio so i need something that will do what i need and still work in a regular desktop compter. please help! i am confused
 
Dude, that's a broad, redundant question..

use the HRC BBS search function at the top of the page. Type in soundcard and read until you understand. Then come back with specific questions you couldn't find there.
 
Just my opinion.....

I had kicked the idea around between buying an Audigy2 or a AP2496 , but eventually decided on the Audigy for a few reasons.....

First of all. Price. I got the Audigy 2 for $80.00 and the AP is $150

Second..... compatibility. All my existing cords and plugs work with the Audigy, I would've needed adapters or new cords for the Audiophile.

Third..... The audigy can achieve less than or equal to 5ms latency using ASIO drivers, and that's good enough for my needs.

Fourth...... I'm a bedroom player using modest equipment, not a professional. So demo quality is all I need and it's easily achieved

With the mediocre equipment I have, the difference in sound quality between the two sound cards would be nil. Maybe with higher end equipment you'd notice a difference, I don't know. Both record at 24/96 with very low latency. I've heard recordings on a SB Live that sound fantastic and I've heard recordings on AP2496 that sound awful. And vice-versa, so.....

With that said, the end result of your recording between these two cards will have much more to do with your actual ability to play and your recording/mixing/mastering technique, than buying one card over another. You can't buy an ear for music and you can't buy yourself talent.
 
Since you have a motif which I believe has optical digital outputs then a terratec ewx 24/96 would be a good budget option. The EWX2496 is similar to the m-audio audiophile except its digital i/o is optical rather than coaxial. You would then have your motif plugged into the optical digital inputs, and your mic into a mic preamp then into the analog inputs of the terratec. This would allow you to listen to your motif while recording your vocals without having to buy a mixer.

You could also just use the analog outputs of the motif and get a m-audio delta 44/66/1010lt etc for similar results except the motifs output would go through an additional D/A A/D conversion reducing sound quality somewhat.

Whatever you do dont get a soundblaster of any description. Do a search for audigy or soundblaster to find out why. It has been explained many times.

I believe that would depend on overall computer application, budget and recording needs, mine has worked flawlessly for 4 months and I couldn't be happier.....

The guy has bought a motif7 and is looking for professional sound. I dont feel a soundblaster product is suitable for those requirements.
