Song for Kenny G

Seriously!:D

I wrote this song for KennyG. I dont know the guy, nor do I know if he writes all his songs, but I had this idea and I will try and get it to him.

The sax part will have more improv, especially the middle section. It wont be as repetitive as it is now.

BTW, thats DWillis in the picture.:D Comments??

Dwillis looks a little like Weird Al crossed with Kenny G. :D

Not a bad sounding sax(?) patch....I always thought it was a clarinet that made that sound. I'm not much into wind instruments though....lol....

In the quiet parts I'm getting some kind of crackle sound - it's like a record or something like those foil toy balls our cat plays with. :confused:

I like the melody - sort of jazzy, AC style which suits Kenny G's style perfectly. I'm sure he could blow some cool improv over this arrangement...

Cool percussion, thumpin' bass....

The ending melody from 3:58 is simple but very cool - I could go for that a few times in the song...:D

Its for young and hip people. Arent you young and hip?:confused: I guess I aint either.:mad::D Its some dumb scratch effect literally imbedded in the patch. I've found a few new ones, I will post a new version later.

Soprano sax pretty much looks like a metal Clarinet.:D

Well I do listen to the Rap/Hip Hop Station when I drive my daughter to school or to dance. I'm hip (but not young I guess) - check me out:

Cool dynamics around 1:13 / 2:20 etc ..... at the same time it seems smoother in the transitions (volume wise) from what I remember from last time. Different drums? That crackle is gone....:)

New drums, from my Korg synth. The former ones were a pattern from my Yamaha mm6, you probably have a similiar pattern in your DJX.
 
Okay - can you clarify a bit of your technique? I play a midi file through my drum machine creating a wave file on my ADAT track(s). Did you replay the MIDI through the KORG, into your SONAR, then re-align the drum track? I'm just thinking that there's no way I could rerecord drums to my ADAT and line them up in any way. Eventually I will get Sonar but I'm still hanging on to my ADAT for now....:D

Sonar is my main clock. It controls my synths, and their metronomes, so all patterns are locked in together. If I am doing drums and they start in measure 10, I can try pressing a trigger and hope it locks in, or I can qickly record it to midi and quantize it so its exactly on. Its really simple.

I dont know adat, but it probably has some sort of midi clock?? If so, you turn it on, then on your DJX you go to "External Clock" and press "on". It will automatically start.

I am just using patterns, three of them in this song. I put in a few fills by hand for transitions. thats pretty much it.
 
One more explanation:

If I set the tempo of Sonar to 120, I can look at my Yamaha and it will also say 120. If you use an arpeggiator, it will be at the same tempo as the song. All my synths are set up this way. Its pretty convenient.:D There are a lot of tracks on this tune, lots of arps that magically lock together.:cool:
 
Not my style of music, but it does sound really good, and I can imagine him playing this song...sounds like something he would do for sure.

Yeah the melodies are good and constantly flowing. Nice work on the writing there. Hopefully the G will play it, would fit right in with his style :cool:

Well, it needs more cowbell. :)

Or, put in Kenny G-ese; it needs a 45 second circular breathing 32nd note arpeggiation blast cadenza on the end, and a lot more ii-V-I loops.


Seriously, it's a nice tune. It's not in a great sax key though; Soprano sax is a Bb instrument, so he'd be playing in D. Take it down a step. The harmonization is nice, there are a lot of nice colors in the song (I'm a synesthete, and the colors are much more apparent in instrumental music than vocal; I wonder if that's why I write in this genre? Hmm...)

Anyway, getting the song to him may prove problematic. Years ago, I wrote a tune for Jeff Lorber, (For those scoring at home, Kenny G used to be Jeff Lorber's sax player, when he was Ken Gorelick) managed to procure his email address, made contact, had some nice conversations, got an address, and sent him the tune, and never heard a peep. :)

Hmmmm, interesting. I didnt think of that. Is it a certain timbre? I mean, a good player on any instrument can play in any key, even though it i a Bb instrument. I will give that some thought, thats pretty observant of you.

Definitely. Artists and managers generally will not accept unsolicited material unless its from a publisher. Fortunately, I have a publisher.:D I have no idea if that will matter but its a start.:)

Well, it's a shriller timbre than an alto, but that's also a big function of horn lacquer, reed type, mouthpiece, and technique. David Sanborn is shriller than Kenny G...

D (concert C) is really not an awful key, it's just not "optimal". Wind instruments like flat keys; it's easier to read and finger.
