I've been thinking about upgrading my software for a some time. I was getting very close to buying Sonar 4 SE, but part of me kept saying, Sonar 5 must be around the corner. Now they are releasing Sonar Home Studio 4 at the end of July.

The Cakewalk web site details the features fairly well, but I am wondering if track folders will be availlable in the new Home Studio. I don't really need the surround features of PE, but the track folders would be nice.

Anyone have any ideas of other salient differences? (I know the included instruments / plug ins are a little different).

I haven't heard any thing about the arrival date of Sonar 5, although it seems they release a new version every fall. Any speculation?

So, what do you think--Sonar 4 SE, Sonar Home Studio, or wait for Sonar 5 SE?

What Cakewalk product version do you have now?

Sonar 2. Extra line entered to make up minimum message length.

Jamie Drum, you know, you pose a great question - what advantages does Sonar 4SE edition have over Sonar HS 4? I'll try and figure it out - maybe a limitation of tracks .

There is a limitation of 64 audio tracks. For me, that is more than enough.

I have to say I find the screenshots of Sonar HS 4 a little off-putting. They seem to have been going for a bit of a Garageband look, but it doesn't work for me.

The audio engine is probably the same. Track folders are something I would like--it is unclear if they are there in HS. Also, it is unclear to me if the mixing/routing options are as complex.

When Cakewalk announced HS 2004, it was pretty similar in features to Sonar 2, but then they released Sonar 3 which was obviously a big update. So, I am thinking, is Sonar 5 around the corner and what does it offer?

What the hell Cakewalk?????

Why does SHS (Sonar Home Studio) only get 64 audio tracks when the last 3 versions of HS (2002,2004,2) had unlimited audio tracks.

The UI looks serioulsly dumbed down from both Sonar 4 and HS2. What happened to all the toolbars???

For the first time in 5 years, I'm thinking it may be time to consider other alternatives.
